Right-to-work-laws say workers can be fired for any reason. A common misperception is that, like my reader's question says, they mean an employer can fire employees for any reason or no reason at all. ... Every state but Montana is already an at-will employment state.Dec 21, 2012

The Daily Stormer is now associated with a terrorist attack. That isn't just political activity. If this website has been promoting violence then that isn't just political activity.

Would they be banned from firing a member of ISIS?

There has been a longstanding cultural tradition supporting the expression of political views, even those that may be unpopular in a specific community or town because we have felt that the access to unpopular, poorly understood, or 'radical' viewpoints serves our democracy well longterm. Employers, by and large have been reticent about firing good well established employees for public expressions of political opinion, largely because once they start down that road, every special interest will be on their asses to fire employees in good standing every time a public issue becomes contentious. It has served our republic well because political movements and new ideas, are not silenced early by threats of termination. We saw how disastrous it was, when employers targeted employees engaged in advocating for collective bargaining rights, and worker rights. The congressional response was in the form of the National Labor Relations Acr. I am not in favor of creating a protected class out of employees who are politically active in a more general way, because that social ethos protects us all from the ill affects of a pervasive pattern of corporate abuse of this potential leverage over politically active employees. If this practice becomes so commonplace that it does not shock the conscience of the community, I would have to support another law to take care of this concern.

Most Americans do not expect employers to be held accountable for the personal political conduct of specific employees because that invisible wall exists and that in turn immunizes companies from this notion that a pro-life employee who remains employed post rally, must mean that their employer shares that view. If you change this equation, and break down this wall between private and workplace conduct , in the imagination of the public, the impact will be to stimulate the very embarrassment you think the company is sparing itself.

You and the Nazi who worked at the Hot Dog stand might be the only two Trump supporters who hung out in Berkeley.... I am sure that there is a Der Wienershnitzer in Mississippi or Idaho that would be proud to have this guy behind the counter. If he plays his cards right, he may even mak assistant manager by the time he's 40...

Unless of course it was a gay pride parade , then he would never be allowed to be fired or his boss would pay a fine and be forced into therapy .

When we have public officials that get caught up in embarrassing private scandals the are almost always forced to resign or be terminated. This is not something new. Even when private citizens do something that causes large public outrage and their identity is made public along with their place of employment (or even place of residence or social media connections like facebook) all ties are severed to prevent demonstrators from showing up and protesting. People that go out in public and act like maniacs get shunned by society, because the public often targets guilt by association. Order needs to be maintained to prevent further chaos. It was already bad enough that protesters and demonstrators were allowed by local police to show up to a march with weapons and shields prepared for violence. So don't be upset about what some employer did under the employment-at-will policy, be upset with the police for not doing the responsible thing and disarming them (like they do everyday in airports, sporting events, and night clubs).

This reminds me of that tech executive several years ago that got fired after cursing out the drive through girl at Chic-fil-a.

I must reiterate, I have no issues with this guy getting fired, but their PC BS statement is pure hypocrisy.

You have that right to want, but you don't have the right to force. Sucks, but tolerance is hard.

Anyone who was a part of this white supremacist rally and stupid enough to be seen, certainly deserves to be disgraced and suffer for their disgusting beliefs. If I knew my employee was this...I would also terminate employment so as to protect my business from contamination and detrimental association. I even just saw a story of a family disowning their son for this and forbidding him from Family events.
Hope it was worth it dude.

I have actually said this to people so many times; that a Jewish homeland is an awesome thing, but in Palestine...? Not such good planning.

Is he ANY of those things?

We know nothing about this guy except that he went to a statue protest.

    That's it.

He may love old statues in public places.

Freedom of speech, yes. PEACEFULLY. These thugs came to the protest looking for violence, as they wore their fighting clothes and carried weapons.
He was involved with this group.

He should not have been there, knowing about their purpose, body armor, guns, and general demeanor. They came looking for violence. Just common sense.

1.Those public officials are not employed as hourly employees with a clear delineation between their working time on the clock, and their private time off the clock consistent with labor law. There is no expectation as a public official that you get to clock out, go home and live a life separate. You are salaried. What you effectively endorsing, continues to allow employers of hourly employees to encroach on their employees private time with expectations of their boss for 24 hours, and get paid for 8 hours. That line is getting more blurred by the minute, as employers exploit that 'employment at will' policy to bully employees both on and off the clock.
    2. If people act like maniacs, there are statutes that get broken, such as disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace etc and folks get arrested. Government is already entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining public order and penalizing folks. I Nobody has shown that this man 'acted like a maniac'. He was present at a protest march. If you want to live in a society in which people act politically , consistent with their right to express their political views, you do not endorse one where they get fired for picking the 'wrong side' of a politically controversial issue. Too many times the wrong side, the embarrassing side, the inconvenient side, happens to involve the direct for profit interests of corporate America.
    3. It must be a peculiarity in my personality. I can be upset at two things at the same time. I can be upset that some demonstrators were allowed to carry weapons and at employers who fire people for showing up at a protest march.

Yes, this law is the result of the free speech movement which started quite literally two blocks away from this hot dog stand. So now we have come back to where it all started, and Berkeley is once again denying people the right to free speech.

It's the old horseshoe effect of going so far to one side, that you end up on the other.

Let me alter JUST ONE word here. "Anyone who was a part of this gay rights rally and stupid enough to be seen, certainly deserves to be disgraced and suffer for their disgusting beliefs. If I knew my employee was this...I would also terminate employment so as to protect my business from contamination and detrimental association. I even just saw a story of a family disowning their son for this and forbidding him from Family events.

I will do it again, "Anyone who was a part of this pro choice rally and stupid enough to be seen, certainly deserves to be disgraced and suffer for their disgusting beliefs. If I knew my employee was this...I would also terminate employment so as to protect my business from contamination and detrimental association. I even just saw a story of a family disowning their son for this and forbidding him from Family events.

One more time. This hits closer to the corporate bottom line. "Anyone who was a part of this Occupy Wall Street rally, and stupid enough to be seen, certainly deserves to be disgraced and suffer for their disgusting beliefs. If I knew my employee was this...I would also terminate employment so as to protect my business from contamination and detrimental association. I even just saw a story of a family disowning their son for this and forbidding him from Family events.

The very last group, I would trust with the job of punishing political speech and expression, in this country, is our employers /corporate benefactors !

The whole point of this country is that we are not supposed to have to hide our politics out of fear.

Can we be racist against the Strigoi?

“By not condemning the Strigoi, [insert name] and his followers have made it clear that they are with them.” http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/you-are-either-against-the-white-supremacists-or-with-them.512110/

The original wording of that essentially is just like racism. On one planet we don’t have that many differences, just myths, but in the universe that will not be the case.

The only way to defeat irrational racism is to convince them, the righteous coming to save the sinners, but where are you going to do that? An underground is a recipe for surprise. Oh, look, Juan Williams thinks it is like the 60’s. Back then, the KKK (Southern Democrats?) burned a cross in my yard because my Father (a Republican) refused to discriminate against blacks.
