It's a monitoring and deterrence mission, not one of provoking the Russians, who have been doing their share of provocative flying in the area. It's also a regularly scheduled rotation and not really newsworthy.

The USA is running out of serviceable aircraft. To deliberately cripple the military, President Obama had thousands of aircraft maintainers discharged from the service. He then did a 180 degree reverse of policy, deciding to bomb many countries, burning out the remaining aircraft quickly.

It takes years and very brainy types to do much of this work. Less than half of US military aircraft can now be flown. Many are flown without full maintenance - why there are more deadly crashes - and the problem is getting worse rather than better due to few of the remaining aircraft maintainers (technicians) re-enlisting due to the massive work load put on them and the private sector willing to pay them $100K+ salaries. The USA military's aircraft is increasingly grounded for lack of maintenance.

We know such a maintainer/technician very well who stated it has reached a crisis mode and that aircraft known should not be flown are increasingly used having no choice. The aircraft are worn out, not serviced, and the maintainers are being pushed in 16 hour, 7 day a week workloads so increasingly are making mistakes and bypassing procedures due to CO demands. This person had literally told us that all Hercules aircraft should be grounded after inspecting a couple of them - telling us this 2 weeks before the one that crashed in Mississippi killing everyone on board. To maintain at least a few fully ready aircraft, base COs are listing their few fully ready aircraft as derelict parts-only air frames to keep other COs from stealing them for missions. Cooking the books is now routine for military aircraft listing aircraft as ready that are not safe and listing the best aircraft remaining as unusable.
