The European Union was formed when France objected to a United Germany without one/A United Europe, with a single currency.
I still ask... Do we need either? 'EU or Germany'

Germany feel their country's only chance for unity now, is in this deal with France to make a United Europe.

If the EU should fall, and Germany hasn't anything in place outside of the EU, what of Germany?

What of Germany if the EU falls?

This issue of 'what does Germany do about Germany if the EU falls' is very real, and perhaps grossly under estimated.

As important as getting the Irish border right, a land border between the EU and the UK; To be blunt.
The EU wish this issue of the Irish border be cleared up first.

What about the reunification of Germany under the sole condition of the EU?
What if this doesn't work issue?
    What of Germany?
    What of the Euro?

Germany would be better out of the EU why they want to pay for the economic bollox up in Greece and Spain and...and...and... god only knows.
Still afraid of irony I guess.

Germany wouldn't exist without the EU and that's got to change.
I'm not saying break up the EU or Germany 'anymore', but, I would like Germany to remain united if the EU falls.
I do not think it's legally possible, but this is what I feel has to change, the option for Germany to be in or out of the EU instead of dependence on the EU for it's own future unification.

I was kindda thinking the opposite...... I'm not sure where you're going with this....Germany is unified althought the Ossis' and Wessis' may not see eye to eye on everything they live in a unified Germany... I spent ten years paying the reunification tax so I have a tiny weensie stake in its success..:)

eeerrrmmm??....I don't think the EU will fail unless Germany wants it too and IMHO I don't think they do because the economic, political and geo-political consequences would be pretty dire - not only for Germany. Is this your train of thought?

I saw a long 'hour long' documentary on Merkel by the BBC on YouTube that spoke about the reunification of Germany only being acceptable to the French if France and Germany joined up with a single currency, and that's when the European Union changed from the EEC I believe.

Germany can still have a lesser EU.

Like the EEC or the EEA or a new regional block of "Greater Germany".

The EU will fall eventually. All things do. No idea when.
Certainly not predicting it this year.

As for nerfing Germany, fear of Germany is in decline. That generation are almost passed now.
And we must know as people that the Germans we meet are not those from history. That they have lived exemplary and blame free lives. There is no punishment due to they who weren't even alive at the time. No slur on their characters for the actions of people in a story book.
That said, no one will cry for Germany if it gets itself nuked. There will be no international sanctions on anyone who does it.
No MAD, just a lot of laughter.
