For people who have, and don't have dogs. I figure I would throw something lighthearted out there on this forum. For me, I would name my fur children after Nintendo characters. Name a Pomeranian Pikachu, a Welsh Corgie Growlithe, a Akita Yoshi, or a Afghan Hound Zelda.
IDK, depends on the dog. But don't think I'm above naming it Doggy or Dog of Dawg or Snoop Lil' Doggy Dogg. I mean it, if I ever feel the need to get a dog and I want to call it Doggy, it's getting called Doggy 'with love, of course'. Take Doggy to the vet, get it called Doggy there and my last name 'how they do' and everything. Get a license and a tag and call it Doggy, don't think I won't if it's like a Doggy to me. I'm think something like a King Staff' or something with the name Doggy, maybe a Lab'.
Named my black lab Boots. First day I got him he would sleep with his head in my boot. Was so strange.
I like to name my animals based on identifiable traits in their personality or markings. I lived in a house with hideous 1970's shag carpeting with a mottled pattern. I owned a tortoiseshell calico was literally a half-shade darker than all the colors in the carpet. And in the dim lighting in the hallway that she loved to lay in, she looked like a stain on the carpet. So I named her Blotch. I had another cat who was all black but had a crescent shaped mark on her chest that looked like a crescent moon. So she was named Nightsky. Linux was named because he loved sleeping in boxes and the one box he seemed to prefer over all others was the box that my copy of Red Hat Linux came in. Shadow was not named because he was a grey tabby, but because he followed me everywhere I went in the house. He didn't have to be on my lap or even in reach of pettings and scritches...but he did have to be in the same room as I was. He was my Shadow.
If I ever got into office and became British Prime Minister and had a wife and kids and they wanted a puppy, I'd doubt I'd call it Doggy or Snoop Lil' Doggy Dogg; I'd let any children in this scenario name it (with parent's permission right) (So nothing like Stinky if Stinky lives in the public eye). I won't like the name Rover since that'll be like Rover the failed auto manufacture. Dog X will be in Humphrey The Cat's paw prints, so the name in such a scenario would have to be wholesome and not stupid. Or if I had good ratings in the polls, call it Lucky.
We had dogs named Dog when I was growing up. It is just what it responded to best. We had dogs with names that would never respond to their names but some other cue that somehow became their unofficial name.
We had a great Pyrenees we named Arie, which translated from Hebrew means "Lion of God". After he died we got his half brother, and since the two were related by blood, we named him "Esprit" (spirit). That was his official name, but we called him "Spree" for short. Spree ... Rest in Peace, boy. We still miss you.

The worst part about having a pet is that it dies. I wasn't going to have any pets until my rabbit, but he kind of found me. I sure wasn't looking for a rabbit to adopt! Lol.
He was sweet. Remember that video I posted a while back about Great Pyrenees who guarded their flock? He was exactly like them. Super gentle with all who belonged to him and who fell under his protection. Ha! I remember we had this one cat who didn't like him just because he was a dog. When he would get near her, she'd raise her back and hiss at him. And she would move towards him - this little 8 lb cat - and he would back up - all 140 lbs of himself. Funniest sight. Because, you see, he was utterly fearless, and he was all Pyrenees. And being all Pyrenees meant that she was under his protection whether she wanted it or not or whether she liked him or not. And so for him, the thought of fighting her was out of the question. There are a lot of wild critters where I live - skunks, raccoons, possums, coyotes. None of those were tolerated by Arie or Spree. And he had zero fear of other dogs. Spree absolutely loved children. I took him to my daughter's Park and Rec soccer game one time. Those soccer fields were crawling with hundreds of children. All the kids were sort of looking at him wide-eyed at his size. Finally one of them asked if he could pet him. I said, "Sure", and the little kid started petting him. Spree just sat there loving it, and all these other kids saw and just sort of swarmed him, all of them wanting to pet him. I don't know if I ever saw that dog so happy and content as I did at that moment with all these little hands petting him at once. He only lived 8 years. Big dogs tend to wear out their hips, and when it happened to him, we couldn't just let him suffer. Saying good-bye to him was very hard. Sure miss him. I have heard and I think it's true that it's best choose a 2 syllable name as it's easier for the dog to understand he's being called and easier for the owner to clearly call. Had a dog named Chance who run like the wind far away but would turn on a dime when I called him. Chaaaaa....oooonce....
D O to the G Even then I'd probably just call it D O or Dio... But I would like to hear a receptionist at a vet say 'D O to the G' and kids if I ever have a family and it's not in the public eye, hear my kids all with the lovable friendly family dog going 'I want D O to the G' or 'D O to the G just farted' or whatever kids and dogs do.
Off topic because she's a cat, but meet Shmooshy, our Himalayan, so named because it looks like her face is shmooshed in.
Name doesnt matter, I call them all 'Dog' or 'Mr. Dog.' Our cats are named 'Hex,' 'Stalin' and 'Agent Chaos.' I call them all 'Kitty.'
My cat, Buddy, was my favorite cat though. I got really close to that cat. He was very lovable and sweet. Buddy is a good name for an animal too.
