Even with safety nets in place, there are still many disabled homeless people. I believe Society has a moral duty to support them.
Social Security Disability combined with subsidized housing allows for a roof over the head, climate control, food and clothes. Medicaid pays for medical. If one spends the money on drugs, booze and smokes though? That's how people end up homeless. You could give them $10000 a month with the exact same results. The "blameless" homeless person in the U.S. is a complete myth... eh, in a country of 330+ million, I'm sure there are a handful of people who slip through the cracks out there somewhere. No amount of government spending will fix that though.
There is only one problem with America right now, and it's non-partisan: people have lost faith that their neighbours have good intentions. Your opposition is always pushing Marxism or Nazism. People have lost trust in their fellow human being. Americans used to disagree, sometimes vehemently, but at the end of the day there's always been trust that your neighbour wants what's best for the country. That's no longer true.
I believe in banning motorcycles. Cars have 7.3 fatalities per billion passenger miles. Motorcycles have 212 fatalities per billion passenger miles.
The welfare state has destroyed generations of the very people it was set up to help. Sorry, but government is the wrong tool for the job because politicians get to act like they are helping people with money that is not theirs. They don't care how much of our money is thrown away. Gun control? No!!!!
In Oregon, USA, there are signs posted at freeway rest areas. The signs tell the readers not to give money to beggars. They say the rest areas are regularly patrolled, and aid is given to those in need. We have a big problem with people who don't want help, or at least the kind of help that is offered. Most all help comes with conditions. One of the big ones is treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. Many don't want that.
I agree that there are a tremendous amount of safety nets in place. Between Medicaid, Disability, and Food Stamps, people can get a great deal of help. There are problems however. Food Stamps are very little, even with Ramens and rice. SSD is the biggest help, but it is almost impossible to convince a judge you are mentally disabled. You are screened by their psychiatrists, whose jobs is to reject your elegibility, and then you go before a judge whose job is to deny your eligibility. Without a great lawyer, the mentally ill have no shot at disability.
Safety nets are great, but they also contribute to generational poverty. Life becomes so good on that safety net that people quit tying to make it on their own. Then they have kids who repeat the process having been conditioned to enjoy benefits over making it on your won and gaining the pride in doing so. Once people are in their safety nets, they are punished for any efforts to better themselves. What do you think any kind of income does to food stamps or benefits? There can be no saving, no college funds, no future planning of any kind. It is an entrenched and permanent helplessness. Some of the biggest disasters are done by those with "Good Intentions."
The US is now an Oligarchy. Hopefully this form of new age feudal system is not the way of the future.
But of course, cars and motorcycles will not be banned, nor will speeds be reduced, even though reducing speeds down to 25 MPH would save tens of thousands of lives every year. This is the choice we make. We understand that, with this choice, lives will be lost. So if the majority of citizens wanted to ban firearms ownership, they would repeal the 2nd Amendment and ban them all. But that is not the case. The majority chooses to preserve the 2nd Amendment. Is there a downside to the presence of guns in our society? Sure. But we choose to preserve that freedom, and that is the choice we make.
I agree with your statements I disagree with your terminology. Progressive indicates progress reverting to backward authoritarian style governments is regressive so I called them regressive. You are right there is nothing liberal about them And the reason why they're every bit as bad as religious Fundamentalist theocrats it's because their beliefs are much like a religion.
Socialism is necessarily a step toward communism. It is a means to create a dictatorship. Capitalism is the best.
USA has one of the worst histories of Human Rights. USA has highest Incarceration Rate in the World. USA is disliked in most of the World.
Gun control can only affect people who will only kill themselves with a firearm, do not already have one, and cannot legally buy one.
