"Christmas" is a creation from Roman times meant to allow Pagans to celebrate their traditional Solstice/Yule while doing so at the same time as a Christian holiday, making it easier to transition to the preferred "Religion" of those in power. It is of no coincidence that Christmas/Easter...etc...fall on or in ancient pagan timelines.

From what I recall, Dec. 25th is when the days begin to become longer. Probably not entirely accurate, but in those times it was when they noticed it. Days would become shorter, remain the same for 3 days, then rise up. This date is found in many religious figures all over the world and time periods. I wouldn’t say it is a completely arbitrary choice.

Christmas is a social construct, and in America at least, it has become nothing more than a celebration of pure and unmitigated greed and avarice. The true meaning and purpose of the holiday has been lost.
