I think the primary system is the best thing about the yanks' system. We will have endless establishment scum forever, at least the US had a decent shot at Bernie Sanders. The problem was its corruption by the Democrats, not the primary system itself.

Since in both of our systems it's effectively impossible for anyone but the leaders of the two major parties to be elected, giving the people a direct say in who those nominees are is a good idea.

I figure the US will be facing a Sanders presidency in 2021. It's not possible for anything like that to happen here.

I'm also not sold on the merits of a parliamentary system over a Presidential one. The Presidential system clearly has its drawbacks, as Trump demonstrates, but it's not like we've had a flawless recent past, what with 5 PMs in 5 years and all that.

I do however think preferential voting beats the **** out of FPTP.

 

The Founders wanted a government that changed hands frequently which is what the presidential system is about. Its more difficult to achieve that in a parliamentary system.

Its part of our checks and balances.

The nation may swing politically left and right but with the change in power it passes center each time.

Like a pendulum on a grandfather clock.

If we could simply replace leaders it would make that system less effective though they did add in a means to do that if absolutely necessary.

We have three year terms of office and can actually.call for elections before that. But as SP stated we also have preferential voting and that means that we have lots of little parties which sometimes end up holding the balance of power. I am not too sure your system is not too adversarial as it seems to get in its own way often
