A responsible non lunatic libertarian third party would be a God send but in the hands of Gary Johnson libertarians have become pie in the sky idealists that live in an ideological bubble.
They really don't care about open borders, their foreign policy is frighteningly isolationist in effect and making weed available to all seems
to be their one issue of agreement with each other.

Brexit is another little...well, rather large thing that gives me confidence that the move towards bigger and more paternalistic central planning is falling out of favor. Less than a generation, too. Everyday (read: sane) people, both here and abroad, seem to be finally believing their lying eyes about multiculturalism/open borders/authoritarian state collectivism.

 

Liberation party has real merit, but they need some smart political people to run off the extremists. They also need to start breeding their own candiates at the state level and stop running 2nd tier GOP candidates that only run there because they wont survice a GOP primary.

I agree, and Gary Johnson is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Libertarian Party's problems. The people running the party are beyond incompetent.

It's little wonder so many libertarians have joined the Republican Party knowing that they've got a better chance to advance the libertarian agenda in the GOP than they do in the LP.

I went from republican to libertarian to independent.
If I saw a surge of libertarianism in the republican party I might jump back in.

I hope for bigger things from Rand Paul and will keep an eye on him in the next few years.

 

Hopefully, one day he'll be President.

Their hatred for him has them off-balanced, irrational, hysterical and sloppy. They are so singularly focused on trying to destroy the Trumpster they've lost sight of the fact that they actually have constituents....who are citizens and residents in states that aren't the northeast and left coasts, citizens and residents who are in the military, who pay taxes, who own businesses, who follow laws, who are victims of their "vicitimized" and "oppressed" useful idiots.

 

I think there is demand for a libertarian party, but you've touched on what is arguably the biggest problem with the LP that exists - it's not run by smart, politically savvy people.

I'm afraid the LP will continue to be a hopeless, incompetent enterprise until there is a large influx of serious libertarians who can bring some credibility to the party. Hopefully, one day that will happen, and looking at all the young libertarians in our country there's hope.
