I suspect you're right. This is evidently how Trump makes "deals" - he makes empty promises and shifts goal-posts.

In all seriousness and in a nonpartizan comment, I hope you are right but I would say it depends on how desperate Trump is to not offend his base when this decision comes up. I hope you are right for the sake of the children. Times have changed in my opinion, so I am not so sure.

Nope he confused national sentiment on the left with what every senator cares about which is the sentiment in their own state.

Schumer shutdown was hugely popular in New York and California which does nothing for the 7 vulnerable democrats in running for reelection in red states.

There is probably some justification for some of the forteign bases, but there should be a bias favoring closing overseas installations.

The NYT tried to warn the DDP that a DACA shutdown would be like way stupid.

"Polling done by a Democratic “super PAC,” the Senate Majority PAC, revealed that in Indiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia, voters would fault Democrats if DACA, the program shielding the young immigrants from deportation, is what prompted the crisis."

the shutdown was smart, it had almost no effect on anything, BUT it did get the public's attention to DACA and dems did get Chip in the deal, so a win there as well

and now if Republicans do not address DACA by feb 8th, they look a lot worse then they would of before

staying shutdown now would of been a bad move, take the chip and address daca in a few weeks again if not addressed... republicans were played

Not to mention that the most conservative issue for Americans who happen to have black skin is illegal immigration.

Something close to 90% of them oppose it.

"Unfortunately, we cannot answer your call today because Congressional Democrats are holding government funding - including funding for our troops and other national security priorities - hostage to an unrelated immigration debate," the recording says.
"Due to this obstruction, the government is shut down."
That is not "completely factual". It is a political statement.

Of course it is completely factual. Even left wing HuffPo agrees.

What is the size of our military budget and who gets it? That is the important thing, not this niggling bullshit. You've spun this entire thing out of changing a few CEO's and Vice Presidents at Boeing and Lockheed. Trump has given billions on top of billions to he military and now suddenly they're the "deep state" since Trump needs a scapegoat. The naivete of some conservatives is purely appalling, or would be if the entire conservative ideology wasn't based around people who make a profession out of knowing nothing about nothing.

OIC, which is why he canceled DACA without WORD ONE of any alternative whatsoever. And he only gave the 6 month extension because he knew the economic dislocation alone of suddenly arresting and deporting several hundred thousand functioning residents might make even his most heartless followers notice. It had nothing to do with anyone blocking any EO.

Dems were to blame. To their credit, they folded fast.

Poll: Most Americans Want Less Immigration, Not More; The Number of Americans Who Want More Americans Is Barely Higher Than Those Who Want No Immigration Whatsoever

It seems the political establishment embarked on a campaign of transforming the nation through high levels of immigration (both legal and illegal), confident of the righteousness and popularity of their cause, without ever -- get this! -- bothering to ask the citizenry they allegedly represent about their feelings on the issue.

Eighty-one percent of Americans want one million or fewer legal immigrants to the United States per year, according to new polling data released Monday by the Harvard-Harris poll, a number lower than the 1.38 million who came to the United States in 2015.

The plurality of respondents, 35 percent, think that there should be between 1 and 250,000 legal immigrants arriving to the United States per year. A net 12 percent want to see immigration increased to 1.5 million people per year or more, while nine percent of Americans think that there should be no new legal immigrants.

Plurality preference for between 1 and 250,000 new immigrants a year persists across white, Hispanic, and black Americans, as well as moderates and self-identified Democrats. Such a rate of immigration would be lower even than the rate expected from the RAISE Act, a bill backed by the administration and expected to cut immigration in half in ten years.

There's a plurality of preference for between 1 (one!) and 250,000 legal immigrants per year, while the current rate is 1.38 million per year, and virtually all the Establishment plans (including, especially, nominal "Republican" Establishment plans) call for combating illegal immigration by simply jacking up legal immigration so much that there's less of a need at all to immigrate illegally.

They will continue ignoring the preferences of the public, and they will continue being baffled and butthurt that the public is in open revolt against them.

Oh, and maybe they'll explain away the public revolt by blaming it on RUSSIAN BOTS.

not like it is now, now it's front and center, dems need republicans to act on it, this is their only leverage, will republicans act, they still may not, they may still try to ruin the dreamers lives, if so, we can have a longer shutdown and the public will support it because of this time

face it, the republicans got played, dems got a short term loss for a long term calculated win for dreamers - and really dems got CHIP this time, so not even much of a loss
