Do you think the US should go the way of England and call all the guns in?

Or do you accept that with freedom comes abuse?

Chime in as you wish, but votes are for UK'ers.

    Both arguments hold merit.
    But "I don't care".
    It's an American problem.

I Nostrodorkus predict... eventual registration of all guns. In a door to door operation mimicing Fallujah or Sadir City minus the violence. With army and sniffer dogs going door to door under emergency powers.
They have the gear the training and the manpower. Also the public good will and authority.

I think crankies know America's weakness and will continue to exploit it and hence gun controls are inevitable. And the speed at which they will be adopted is a least one per massacre.
Which means very soon the army will have to go door to door to enforce them. I no longer feel as I used to only 2 weeks ago, that it would carry on as it is now forever. Locked in the political grip of shooters. I judge America to be a nation in crisis.

I think your poll won't get any UK takers for confiscating all guns except bolt action rifles and revolvers.
The UK is not handgun friendly. Handguns are for killing people. They are murder weapons. They serve no practical purpose. A UK person won't see the point in confiscating one type of murder weapon but excluding this one.
A revolver was used in one of our two gun massacres.

I'm not overly concerned with whatever response any Limey my give, my answer will remain the same. Sure glad our Founders' had the good sense to rebel against those folks, they wouldn't know freedom if it bit them in the arse...

To most of the public now in the UK, the idea of someone owning a gun seems about as alien as the idea of someone owning a nuclear warhead or an aircraft carrier. "What do you need that for? I don't know anyone who has one."

The UK has become very, how shall we say, "unfriendly" towards people who would take up this "unique" hobby, passing all sorts of restrictive regulations. There's even been a move towards demonizing hunting and starting down the road of making that incrementally more illegal (in the name of "animal cruelty"). Of course once hunting is gone, that will pretty much eliminate the main justification seen in the UK for guns. There's been an attack on the concept of self defense too, with people being sentenced to prison just for using a stun gun on an intruder who broke in to their home during the middle of the night. So you can see, this entire movement has been much broader than just the attack on guns.

One man, an expert shooter who competed in the Olympics, was sent to prison for having too many little boxes of ammunition in his house.

Wow um I am not one who normally says this but that scenario would lead to the largest expression of violence in the history of this country since the Civil War. Lets just pretend that what you suggest does not violate multiple rights protected by our Constitution. So first you are dealing with more then 350 million firearms and a country that stretches across the North American continent. Logistically speaking a nightmare to transport, supply and over see both the troops and the movement and disposal of firearms found. Then you have to consider you would be going into the inner cities of every state and going door to door looking for firearms which very likely would be kept by felons. So they will fight because they know they will be arrested. Then you have the normally law abiding citizen that would see that as a clear attack upon their person so many of them will fight. Also you would have to search millions of miles of land outside of cities for stockpiles while going into insular small towns that protect "their own." .

Now I am not talking about just opening their door and shooting. No they would organize, there would be militias formed and undergrounds created and gangs putting aside their differences when confronted with a common foe. Not to mention the members of the military that end up supporting the populace instead of suppressing it. You would have snipers, improvised weapons, and bombings. Bases over thrown and fighting within military installations. No place outside of safe zones constantly patrolled would be safe. Literally you would turn this country into Syria or Bosnia. I seriously think that you would see this country shatter if we instituted a door to door confiscation of fire arms. It is just to crude of a solution to be ignored or rationalized.

    Is that true?

Using a stun gun in self defense gets the homeowner put in jail?

Opinions of guns among the UK population is as varied and diverse as it is in the US, much more that your strangely selective poll options allow for. Most probably don’t have much interest in what the US does about the issue though, most probably don’t really think about the issue in general as it’s far from a high concern over here.

It should be noted that nobody, on either side of the pond, has suggested the US should simply imitate UK gun laws (either what they actually are or what they’re misrepresented as being) as it is clear that we’re two very different countries with very different societies.

It can also be frustrating then Americans do misrepresent the UK and the British people as a tool to support their own domestic policy preferences (much as it is when it’s done over healthcare, immigration and other topics).

UK opinions on guns is pretty much the same. There isn't a big debate here.

American shootings are always on the news here.
It's a matter of pubic interest worldwide, not just in America or the UK.

    @Crawdadr
Constitution means dick. It can be amended add infinitum.
Your military is already adapt at disarming cities. And they do so in way more hostile environments than their home towns with logistic trains that span the entire globe, not just round the corner.

What criminals will do is hide their guns.
    Sniffer dogs will find them.
They won't all fight because you won't win a fight vs an army. Jail is commonly preferred to death.

And they won't get arrested at all if you accompany disarmament with an amnesty. Which they will.

Anyone who can disarm Fallujah will have no problems at all with an American city.
    None.
As and when your country wants to do it, it will.

Starting with a city that has just had a big arsed school massacre. Think Beslan. Let some nut get 100 kills. They will disarm. What else can they do?
More pathetic ideas... More excuses...Placebo responses won't work for ever. Sooner or later the country will rebel. They will not stand for the continuing murder of their children indefinitely. Unsustainable.
They will start lynching people soon.

Ok, you really do not get the American psyche and how they respond to overt acts of tyranny.

So lets start with amending the Constitution, yes it can be amended through a VERY hard process which would be fought for decades. And amid thunderous protest where it comes to removing a right. Adding rights is far easier then taking them away.

Second Fallujah was never disarmed it was conquered and even then you still had people armed and fighting gorilla style. Also the average American city is far more armed then Fallujah or any city we have gone into that was not occupied by a army.

Next we are a citizen army not some ultra fanatic army sworn too a God or person. The effects of what you propose would split the army down the middle.

It is baffling that anyone would think that what you propose would work. But perhaps it is because you did not grow up here and have not lived here. It would destroy this country.

You left out an option: "I don't care what the UK thinks about this issue"

I get the swagger, but the reality is like with the security guard who wouldn't fight.

Most people's mouths are bigger than their penises.

Fallujah was disarmed. They went house to house street by street.
And they were way better armed than you are.
Also a lot more hostile to the US military than you are.

I think your country is doing an excellent job of destroying itself already.
I wouldn't suggest such a thing if I thought you weren't in a period of crisis, but I do think you are in a period of crisis.

I know all the second amendment fantasists dream of a civil war. Their very own moment of glory. But big mouth, tiny penis.

David Koresh split nothing apart at all. He had the balls. But you never rallied. The army didn't revolt and the police didn't join him.
They haven't even rallied to defend their children. Unimpressive.
Not even willing to sacrifice their toys let alone their lives.

Not my child. Why should I?
You are going to give up your life to defend your friends AK 47. Pfft. Believe that and you'll believe anything.
