I can give you any number of instances where both ends of the political spectrum trampled individual rights. In fact, when I taught American history (retired now), I specifically pointed out instances so we could begin to have discussions in class with everyone a bit chastened about their side.

The American Revolution wasn't fought over gun rights, fer crissake.

The Declaration of Independence could have been subtitled, "Why We Fight." It was a manifesto spread throughout the colonies with a long list of grievances that included outrageous things like the quartering of soldiers. You may want gun rights to be the hill you die on, but I want to risk my neck for a much greater cause like our FFs did when they took the great gamble.
