Hopefully he'll be remembered in the long term for his brilliance in various fields of science and not the minimal SJW-esque commentary he gave in the later years that the media over-hyped to no end.

Of course his physics work will be remembered. Minor political activism is, at best, a footnote for anyone. In fact, I don't recall any "SJW-esque" BS. I just remember his comments about frickin' space aliens.

I am saddened that he decided to die but we all knew it was inevitable.
Hus ashes should be sent out into space in a Tesla with the urn strapped in the drivers seat. How cool would that be?

He accomplished so much more than should have ever been possible.

I saw Hawking some years ago. Someone asked, if he could go anywhere he wanted to go, where would it be? Inside a black hole, he responded.

Although I read a couple of his books, I mostly remember his cameo in an episode of Star Trek.

Why do you keep saying he decided to die?

It was hardly an "attack" in the way you are intimating. The poster even said that SJW commentary was over-hyped by the media, meaning he thought they took it (unfairly) too far against Mr. Hawking. I think you went too far in your seizing an opportunity yourself.

I've long had him in the back of my mind as one who seemed likely to go at any time, given his extraordinary medical condition. It's great that we had him with us for as long as we did, and in fact he lived to a pretty good age, considering the averages.

This is too bad. I always thought he was a much better example of how 'challenged' people should respond to their challenges than parathletes in that he didn't go into something he would have needed special help to even do it at all but he found something he could do and then became the best there is at it. He himself once said that he found his disorder actually helped him in that he wasn't distracted by physical things. (For God's sake I am NOT attacking the handicapped or the Paralympics here. Great things, great people, but handicapped people should understand they can be real movers and shakers in the world if they want to and try to do that as much as anyone

To put it another way we have here a guy I think many on this board would have actually envied even though he had about as bad a physical challenge as I think you can even imagine. He was famous and wealthy, had children and did well by them while contributing greatly to the knowledge of the world. I don't think you can really do a whole lot better than that. I hope he gets to see inside the Black Hole now like he wanted. RIP

    A sad day.
The man loved life and hated no one, and also had a sense of humour and dedicated his life to the universe and shared his theories and calculations, never afraid of any one else stealing his ideas, he was a superman and the man who over came doubt to present his ideas as his and came up with The Big Bang Theory for the origins of space time.

    Rest in peace.

We are all mortal and that's not necessarily that bad. :flowerpot:

The man lived on borrowed time for 50 years. "A Brief History of Time" is the book that launched a lifelong love of the stars for me.

I hope that many of his theories become validated, like hawking radiation for black holes, and that he receives a posthumous nobel prize for his contributions to science.

With March 14 marking Pi Day, Einstein's birthday and Hawking's death, the math geeks must be exploding!
