When I lived in NJ in the 80s we didn't lock our doors either. Didn't need leashes on dogs. Kids could play unsupervised. NO helmets. No seat belts. Everyone knew everyone. Now I live in a wealthy neighborhood in S. FL in 2018. People sneak in through our gates on occasion to steal from the haves. Sucks, but that's life. The only time a strange black teenager knocked on my door is to sell something for a school fund raiser which is technically illegal in the neighborhood. No soliciting!! I know my neighbor's and coworker's son and I'm familiar with another black family on the other side of the sub division. Otherwise, its all white people, Hispanics, and a few Indian families. So, I have every right to be "suspicious" if a strange black teenager is at my doorstep=) And its about as far from a shithole as it gets.

We cant defeat criminally, its been around forever and will persist.

But we can save countless people from becoming criminals by discouraging the culture of criminality that is currently regarded as popular.
