I am left speechless when hearing about things like this. There was a person calling in about this subject on the radio and was not sure that I heard right but then when checked it out, it's totally true. This country is rooted in greed and it has spread and metastasized like a cancer. Why do we accept this and pretend that this is what a free market is supposed to represent?
When there are so called representatives in government that are not only ignoring this but taking kickbacks for this, you know we are in deep **** and the sock-cuckers need to go! Appalling! These are the death panels.

That's okay...it's not copyrighted and I might have picked it up somewhere else... I really cannot recall. It's just that sometimes no other words will do.

Patent rights, along with FDA drug approval methodology and its suspected collusion with pharmaceutical companies, validate legalized extortion.

FDA approval for ONE drug typically costs over one-half billion dollars (even for an antihistamine, more for lifesaving drugs). But, the consumer not only pays for this, but also all of the cost of research and development, advertising and marketing costs, production, and a hefty profit for the pharmaceutical company, but also insures it against projected losses due lawsuits or possible premature extrication from the market and reimburses the losses incurred from past failures.

Since prices are calculated using the number of sales IN THE U.S. anticipated for the duration of the patent, fixed costs are no longer a factor in sales to foreign markets. . . . Only production costs, which are usually negligible.

. . . . But, drug companies negotiate individually with these countries to maximize profits.

. . . . And, testing for these life-saving drugs typically lasts for 10 years, with most qualifying rejected applicants dying because trials are limited to only a VERY small number.

Greed is nonetheless the primary factor in these unaffordable prices, which will inevitably lead to socialized medicine.

84 grand sounds pretty cheap for something that will save your life. There is the option of not taking it.

Got 84 grand in your wallet? The rest of your family and friends too? If not, call the funeral home. A better idea is to buy on the global market (Canada, India, and Germany are good choices). It's easy. First do a little vendor shopping, make your choice, get a written prescription from you doc and send it to your new supplier.

People buy 60 thounsand dollar cars all the time. And not in my wallet but in my bank account. But back to my point, 84 thousand is not that expensive if it will save your life. Does a company that makes something that literally saves life deserve to make money off its invention. If there is no profit motive in this why do it.

Well if you say that's too much why don't you tell us how much they invested into that drug so we have the hard numbers of the profit they are making.

Or does none of that matter to you folks?

And that in one sentence is the reason why US healthcare is so expensive. They know that we will pay anything for our medical wellbeing and will hike their prices accordingly. I work with healthcare companies and one thing I was told is that one common piece of advise healthcare providers have is that if people are paying their bills on time then the price is too low, hike the price until people can barely afford to pay and many start going into debt.

I don't know if I'd trust the quality coming from India, however we should be able to buy it cheaper from countries such as Canada. Bills allowing it keep getting shut down.

If you need this drug and want to save some money, then buy it from the cheapest supplier.

Why blame the free market for this? It's like getting a blowjob in Mexico and a blowjob in NYC. The prices are going to be different, just like the prices are different for a microwave oven built in China and a microwave built in Japan.

Seriously, I would love to hear how you blame the free market for this, but... doubtful.

Any economic system gone unchecked will become corrupted. Unrestrained capitalism has led America to runaway greed and manipulation of free markets. Pharmaceutical company's attempt to close off foreign sources of identical drugs is one example. When one supplier locks up a market, prices are unlikely to be rational.

Without the profit motive why invest in new drugs. There will always be new discoveries in the pharmaceutical industry that will extend people's lives. You can either pay for it or not reward the capitalist pigs by not buying the drug.

You haven't a clue how the industry works. I saw it up close, working there.

Lawsuits, to protect our product, was a YUGE percentage of profits. Apply for off label uses, to extend monopoly almost indefinitely. ETC ETC ETC. All kinds of tricks and traps.
