I've never heard of these things before...the size of a matchhead!!
Christ on a bike I always knew Australia had some pretty nasty critters but a jellyfish...the size of a matchhead...and...transparent...that just isn't fair!!

Dammnn straight! I visit Cairns regularly in Australia’s top end tropics on the other side of this island continent from WA but you’ll never find me swimming in salt water. If it ain’t jellies it is crockadillies! Certain winds and waters bring em in...jellies that is but I suppose the locals are well aware of this. Plenty of fresh water to swim in anyway! There is the box jelly fish as well, which is the larger species, which is lethal but apparently not as lethal as that little one!

The Irukanji is not normally fatal if you can get them to hospital fast - the sting causes a catecholemine release which is why the victims get a "feeling of doom" as well as intense pain

They are about the size of a five cent piece and the stingers are often triggered by fresh water and guess what most people do after a swim in the sea?

I was having a quick read about these wee critters after having seen the article. It’s amazing that something so small is so poisonous! The fact that it’s transparent seems to go against nature as it seems that most of these wee bit nasties have bright colours so that you don’t piss them off?
I assume that the young lass had an extreme adverse reaction to the sting ergo the induced coma for two weeks.... would that be right?

being a jelly they don't have the capacity to be pissed off, they drift into the victim accidentally ... the transparency may be a defensive technique to avoid being eaten, even highly poisonous creatures have predators.

Could easily have had multiple stings since they can swarm

There is still a lot of research required actually but James Cook Uni is still leading that research last I heard

    Yep - turtles

That is why plastic bags in the ocean are so deadly to the wildlife - the poor turtles think they are Jellyfish eat them and then choke to death

Are most Medical facilities normally equipped to diagnose and treat such incidents ?

When I was in Emergency Medicine We had ever changing lists of what could be done where, Hyperbaric chambers, re-implantation teams, Micro Surgery etc....

    Toxicological laboratories and specialists........

    Absolutely!!!

Even in the remote communities in the gulf they have access to central expertise through video conferencing. RFDS is usually not too far away to medivac to a tertiary facility

How frustrating it must be to have access to all those spectacular pristine beaches but you can't go in the water to cool off.

Not bad for a national health system that is basically free service. It is all covered by Medicare not a perfect system but nothing is

It is a bit of a shame actually. There are lots of beautiful fresh water swimming holes but it’s no consolation for people who love swimming in salt water and activities associated.

We have both good and bad medical personnel. Our SYSTEM is the foundation of our comparatively excellent health care. And it's all free :)

I believe Bowerbird is a wonderful health- care professional, as are her many colleagues.

And no, nothing is "free" reduced cost.
    Tax funded.

I try but as with any country as big as ours there is a gap between rural and metropolitan health care

This is where Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is a complete must. It is mostly funded by donation and government of course but they will actually land on the properties or even the highway itself to retrieve injured people. Our country is too big for chopper mostly particularly in the Northern Territory

True but it is a system that assures you will be seen first before your bank balance or health care cards are checked. Political suicide here is to suggest we change the health care system. We feel about it the way you lot feel about guns :p

We have some jets travelling the state but from my reasonably large hospital it is 2.5 hours by prop plane to the coast and the nearest tertiary hospital and 2.5 hours by jet to the main metropolitan hospitals in Brisbane
