The only reason women have abortions is because they WANT to have a baby in the future

That is not what I’m saying. I’m saying that I do see some unfairness in giving women total freedom over their lives, but not men. Saying “he made his choice, now he has to deal with it.” Does sound weirdly similar to what anti-abortion people say, doesn’t it? If both parties were equally free, then the woman would have autonomy over her body, and the man would not necessarily be obligated to support the child. As long as we’re all for choice, right?

The thing is, I don’t like the idea of a man abandoning his child like that, but I find it hard to refute the argument made by a previous poster. I can’t actually see the logical argument against this. If women should not be legally compelled to have babies, the same could apply to a man’s responsibilities. Particularly if they really aren’t ready.

The issue of abortion is a separate issue from supporting a BORN child....

Pregnancy and the question of abortion are entirely different from a legal (or moral) responsibility to support the upbringing of your biological offspring.

I think the key is to recognising the distinction between the pregnant person, with their rights and responsibilities and the biological parents, with their rights and responsibilities. Normally the pregnant person and the biological mother is the same individual and so she has a combined set of rights and responsibilities, different to those of the biological father.

I find the best way to demonstrate this is to consider the situation of surrogacy. In that situation, there is the pregnant person (the surrogate) and the biological parents, mother and father who contributed the egg and sperm. Here, the mother and father have (indeed share) exactly the same rights and responsibilities but the pregnant surrogate also has her own different rights and responsibilities too. A decision to abort would be ultimately down to her; the parents couldn’t force her to either abort or carry to term against her will (though there could be separate contractual consequences) and they can’t simply walk away and abandon her and the child (though in many places the law can be fuzzy on what should happen if they try).

How about she puts that baby into the foster care system and she can get it back when she's ready to have a child?

The most idiotic claim I have yet to read is she has it because it harms her body.

Believe me, her abortion is to harm a child she is not wanting to carry to term.

Check out what one female college student wrote:

They set up a table handing out fetus-shaped cookies, and had papers printed with "Abortion should remain legal because" where students could fill in the blank, and then the papers would be displayed at the table.

One female student wrote on the paper: "My vagina is too pretty to let a fetus crawl out"

MyGAWD! What an awful thing to do to a child.... are you serious???

Goes to show I'm correct when I claim Anti-Choicers ONLY care about fetuses, NOT actual BORN children....

AND my post you quoted above was in reference to child support...try not to shoot off in so much misdirection.....

:) Almost as silly as thinking Panda bear gestation has something to do with abortion....

BUT women may abort for any reason they choose :)

She'd rather off her child than have her vagina get stretched out a little bit.

NO, it isn't....you obviously have no idea what abandonment can do to a child...nor care. If a child never existed it couldn't be harmed this way in your weird, cruel experiment with children.

...and it's still up to the woman to decide what "alternative" is best, YOU have no control over that :)

Yup! It's her choice....not yours ......BTW, adults say "fetus" because that's what is aborted...but anyway you choose to portray it, it STILL is her choice and you have no control over it :)

So what you are saying is men should have the final decision. If they don’t want the child they create, then they shouldn’t have to support it because they didn’t want it. I will say this again, men know that women have the final decision in this matter. It is women who have to go through nine months of pregnancy, raise a kid for 9 months. It is women who have a cramp ridden abortion.
Let’s say she doesn’t want a child and he does, should she be forced to breed against her will because that’s what he wants? And if he doesn’t want the child he created it, he should be able to abandon it? We just have different values
Men make their choice before they have sex, they know the consequence ...same with women. But once there is a pregnancy, the field is not level!

Only a man could be that ignorant about the dangers to a woman’s body during pregnancy ..unbelievable. Women don’t die of stretched vagina....do some research

personally, I think the world would be a better place if all children that come into this world were wanted, I have no issue with people that do not want children not having children

The question is how do you define "this world" ? Do you regard the inside of a uterus as coming into this world?

I'm just saying some people seem to think "coming into this world" only starts with exit from the uterus.
