"Authorities are expected to announce the arrest Wednesday of a suspect in the decades-old East Area Rapist case, The Bee has learned.

The suspect has been living in the Sacramento area and was identified after a renewed push of the investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, a source said.

The East Area Rapist, also known as the Golden State Killer, the Original Night Stalker and the Diamond Knot Killer, is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 victims and burglarized hundreds of homes." - http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article209779364.html

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested on a warrant from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and booked early Wednesday on two counts of murder, according to Sacramento County jail records. A person familiar with the matter confirmed that Mr. DeAngelo had been arrested in connection with the case.

This was the case that Patton Oswalds wife was working on for a book before she died. He pushed to get it finished and is producing a movie based on the killer, which I think, lit a fire under the butts of the police.

    Interested he was a cop!

Good to catch him before he's dead, investigators say DNA was the key!

Please support your vity and state to support funding of DNA evidence and all rape kits to be processed QUICKLY and correctly!

Many states have backlogs years long, some are never processed! These funding delays give criminals a free pass!

Sadly California does not have a death sentence so this POS will die of old age in prison or get paroled at age 96.

There was a movie about a serial killer that was originally a cop. Art imitates life. Glad they got the SOB.

You believe that out of all the places he struck, which probably involved no less than 20 police departments, all that was missing in order to solve the case is police interest? Out of all those departments you don't think not one officer took a passing interest in the case?

I kept up with the case before it was solved. Nobody took the "EAR/ONS is a cop" theory that seriously. Personally, I thought he started as a teenager because his attacks lined up with an academic schedule. Nobody really saw this coming.

But yeah, turns out, he was a police officer for most of the East Area Rapist attacks, and when he got fired for shoplifting, he moved south and began killing. Probably was pissed off that he got fired.
