"Elderly and disabled tenants would be exempt from the increase", meaning this will only impact the able-bodied, and I've long argued they shouldn't be counting on government (taxpayer money) to support them in the first place. Increasing how much they pay in rent would have a similar impact to reducing welfare benefits, which I've also long supported. Maybe this will be a first step towards weaning people off of welfare....?

I also agree wholeheartedly with Carson that "too much government support creates a culture of dependency". Anything which can reduce dependency -- and increase productivity and personal responsibility -- is a step in the right direction

    Thoughts?

That's not why he wants to raise the rent.
Price levels create price signals that help more efficiently allocate limited resources.

From an economic standpoint it would be more efficient (and fair) to just rent the housing to the highest bidder and then hand out the proceeds of those profits to the people you want to help. Otherwise you're basically creating a lottery system because not everyone you want to give housing to is going to be able to get it.

Pretty sure he grew up in a middle class neighborhood.

But what do you get from an unqualified half asleep guy who is completely out of touch.

economists are to capitalism as priests were to the divine right of kings: they have hands up their asses and strings on their bodies, and they'll dance to whatever tune they're told. if it was profitable to provide public housing, the economics industry would already have you convinced of it. but **** profit.

I agree that minimum wage needs to be increased. Not to $15 like some were wanting, but I think an increase to $10/hour would be better than where it's at now.

However, with a higher income, they will be eligible for less handouts.

Personally I am good with this. But it needs to be coordinated with severe punishment for dead beat Dads.

Stiff prison time unless they pay back what the mother received from the government. Also with interest.

Too keep things in perspective, isn't HUD's 2019 budget something like 40+ billion $$$'s? It's not some piddling little welfare program, and I'm sure it's overdue for review.

There are MILLIONS of elderly and disabled of people are unable to have medicine, health care, decent food, heat, and so much else because there are a monstrous backlog of applications for the elderly and disabled! Many of the lists are 5 to 8 years long and most of these people while never receive any help.

This possible cut for the poor but not disabled may be a good idea but the purpose is not being done to help the elderly and disabled, it's to further cuts for the wealthy.

This is a trivial patch on a festering and sometimes deadly disease in America.

The reason there is not enough for the disabled is that there are too many welfare bums milking the system

Perhaps if we could wean the able-bodied-but-lazy-and-irresponsible off of these programs, we could cut down on the backlog and the truly deserving (elderly and disabled) could be cared for more efficiently....

And the lies and B'S flows forth from Trump World yet ever faster!

Only 6 percent of housing assistance is used by able-bodied people.

Only 1 out of 4 of ALL people get ANY assistance from these programs!

That is .06 x .25 = 1.23 percent of able-bodied are getting benefits, so if we entirely eliminate them, we have a little over 1 out of hundred of our disabled and needy elderly now getting support, with still 3/4 of disabled and needy elderly without help!

Where is even that miserable 1% going to transfer to the disabled? Where is a program to ANY of huge majority of those without ANYTHING going to get help from this program, when before Reagan we provided most of it!

OH, right, Trump and the Republicans will provide another tax cut and double the assistance for millionaire farmers corporations (which would more than cover the shortfall all by itself!) and magically Trumpies will be able to ignore the problem for a another year.

I just did a GIS analysis of the location of EPA superfund site locations showing the majority are near African American populations. One of my points was that improved education and better job opportunities will allow poor people to move up and out of the polluted areas.

The same principals apply here. Improve education and match people up with available jobs. According to recent BLS reports, there are about 6 million job opening in the US. Surely we can figure something out on that.

As far as education reform, we need to look at what New Orleans did after Katrina. Google it, you will be surprised to find out that New Orleans has made dramatic improvements.

Is this aggressive rant really called for?

You originally referred to "MILLIONS of elderly and disabled" who are "unable to have medicine, health care, decent food, heat, and so much else because there are a monstrous backlog of applications for the elderly and disabled". Now you seem to be focusing on housing.

So do you disagree these programs could be more efficient if we could wean the able-bodied-but-lazy-and-irresponsible off of them and get them out of the system?

What percentage of able-bodied people do you think we should be supporting via welfare programs?

Also, could you share a source for your 1 in 4 statistic? I see you added a source for your 6% statistic, but it says 6% who don't already work -- are these housing recipients who "work" part-timers? Would they be seeking better paying employment, more hours, etc if their govt subsidies were cut? Etc....

You have an source but your source appears to be an opinion where are your statistics? Fiddlerguy quoted stats but I could not open his link so I do not know if his stats were in the link.

Do not feel personally insulted by the knickname for Trump supporters I assign knicknames as other people do- Lying Ted, and Crooked Hillary did not like theirs either so Trump fans do not like Trumpeizdas.

I do not see what I wrote as trolling if you donwe can disagree.
