It was the enlightenment thinkers who developed "Secular" rational for individual liberty. The end of Slavery was a result the Philosophical reasoning of the enlightenment thinkers .. that used by the founding fathers to come up with the principles on which this good nation was founded as per Classical Liberalism ... NOT Christianity.

The Church hated Philosophy because they did not want people to use critical thinking skills to challenge religious dogma.

One of the first actions of the Church once they obtained power was to close the schools of Philosophy - including the 700 year old Platonic school of Philosophy. They wanted to keep people stupid - dumb sheep are easier to herd. It was illegal to read the Bible. Literacy declined to such a point that by the middle ages Kings and Queens could not read and even some Bishops were illiterate.

Galileo - was imprisoned in 1633 under your lovely and enlightened supporter of individual liberty- Pope Urban (now that you mention him). Under threat of torture he was forced to recant and put under house arrest until he died in 1642.

I am liberal and I think conservatives routinely ignore what the Lord said about greed, about concerns for workers and the poor and many other things. They pay attention to part of the bible and ignore the rest. Or they create a reality where materialism does not exist in the US and where the poor and weak are in the shape they are in purely for their own failures.

The civil war ended slavery. Abraham Lincoln was not particularly religious nor were many of the radical republicans. More to the point very religious people supported slavery in the US and long afterwords in Jim Crow and the KKK.

 

What does this have to do with Christians killing other Christians and Jews ?
