Al Qaeda is a shadow of its former self and the war in Afghanistan continues to ensure that the Afghan government can prevent another Taliban takeover.

Tell that to the the Libyans.

Do you expect NATO forces to occupy Afghanistan indefinitely?

Until the Afghan army and government is able to defend itself.

Which might be 100 years, given the progress so far.

The US didn't need NATO to send troops though. It was just a formality. The US would have no problem fighting the Taliban on its own. You know when adults are lifting a heavy couch and a 5 year old kid says he wants to help and the adults let him. That's Article 5 after 911.

On what do you base this claim?

It was not a formality. There is no requirement for a country to invoke article 5. We chose to.

And we could not have fought in Afghanistan without the help of our NATO Allies’ based in Europe and Diego Garcia.

History and current events. No nation has been able to subdue Afghanistan in recorded history. And the Taliban has been around for over thirty years already.

The Taliban is the authentic movement of the Afghan people.

The Taliban is an authentic movement of Pashtuns. That’s it. They only represent one tribal group and even then not all of them.

So why would Trump go down this road unless Putin asked Trump if he would Support the NATO pac by defending Montenegro? Why would he suddenly start to mention Montenegro after the Putin meeting.

If Putin asked about that, and Trump hasn’t informed our allies, then Trump truely is being a traitor.

Well, that's what people are asking themselves.

You are right. There are no "Afghan people", only a collection of tribes, the plurality of which are Pashtuns. And they are the most significant military and political force in Afghanistan.

How do you propose to defeat them when no one else in history has managed the feat?

Really? No one has ever defeated the Pashtuns? You’re going to stand by that claim?

Your bonespur/chickenhawk comment would have made sense if Trump was an enthusiastic supporter of expanding NATO and drooling for the chance to go to war. As it is, he's questioning the wisdom of that course, and at least in this thread, I've yet to hear any compelling reasons for it.

    So it just sounds idiotic.

Montenegro becoming a member of NATO is a recent choice. There is a large body of politicos in the US who want to add Georgia and Ukraine. It's a fair question to ask if that enhances US national security or the security of other current NATO members. So me asking if Montenegro is worth even one American's life is also a fair question, one that you dodged by shrugging and saying, well they're in NATO now, and bonespurs.

Of course it makes a difference! This forum is replete with non veterans mocking the lack of service of other non veterans. It makes no sense to pull your chickenhawk card if you didn't serve yourself. Of course, it's also stupid to pull the chickenhawk card against a politician who isn't advocating military action and is trying to avoid it.

    That's just dumb.

Notice how many of the alt-left media and the usual suspects here are now pushing for a war with Russia. Some people just can't seem to get out of their own way.

I, for one, am a hard working American and a patriot, and I know that since day one, Trump hasn't done the right thing. I would be quite misinformed too if all I did was watch Fox.

Trump mentioned Montenegro because it likely came up at the secretive meeting...among other things... such as how to get the sanctions lifted so that Putin can get his grubby hands on the money he has stolen that is now frozen. Idiot Trump probably never even heard of Montenegro until Putin schooled him on it.

What's stupid, and dumb, and idiotic, is getting all upset over some theoretical conflict in Montenegro at this moment. What's chicken is backing down from your commitment to a NATO ally before you even know whether you're going to have to support them in a conflict, or the conditions under which that conflict might occur, just because it's fits your momentary political agenda in a forum.

Well to be fair, Montenegro is what the thread is about. I thank you for your non contribution to the topic.

So sticking up for the if necessary protection of Montenegro as a member of NATO, in a thread about Montenegro, isn't contributing. Ha ha, sure pal.

This was your first response to my comment asking another poster if they were willing to fight and die for Montenegro.

The quality of comments has not improved.
