Practical Firearms Discussion: The single stack 9's

Like many of us, the weapon I carry has a lot to do with what my apparent threat level is perceived to be, the time of the year and what I have on. Then there is the easy on easy off principle. You'll carry the weapon that's easy to carry. A small lightweight pistol or revolver that you put in a pocket, a Remora or clip on holster is the one you'll most likely carry.

 

I don't think that question can be easily answered but it's certainly in the millions. In Dec of 2015 S&W announced that it's millionth production Shield after less than a 5 year roll out. I've heard/read that Smith has reached past the TWO MILLIONTH Shield earlier this year. That's just one manufacturer.

 

Total production numbers were not being inquired about. Rather it was inquiring about how many different models of semi-automatic handguns are chambered for the nine millimeter round, feature a single stack magazine design, and are currently being produced. How many different models does the public in the united states have to choose from?

 

Quite a few , I bet it is near 50 different models. I have been debating the purchase of a Sig 365 for some time now. For some time now I have been carrying MP shields, I have a pair of them with night sights and minor trigger jobs, and I definitely would be considered above average shooting them. I also own multiple double stack 9's and just unsure if I want to change my carry weapon or just have another gun to target practice with in 9mm.

 

I'd say that number is probably not that far off, especially if you start looking at a spate of chopped and bobbed 1911's in 9mm as well as recent no longer in production weapons such as the S&W 3913. In addition, some companies have more than one variation including Ruger, Walther, Sig, Honor Defense and Kahr.

 

Huh! Just so you know, I'm not pressing this to be obdurate or to question your own experiences. I'm just genuinely interested and curious that your experiences have been so dramatically and diametrically opposite to mine.

I'll admit I'm wondering if we're talking about the same thing when we're talking about "trigger reset". Just to clarify: I'm talking about the distance the trigger has to travel forward after the first shot has been fired before the sear resets and the trigger can be pressed to fire the weapon again.

I've shot tons of striker fired guns; from Glocks to S&W M&Ps even to FN 509s. None of them even come close to having resets as short as the S&W 2nd and 3rd gen pistols I've handled do. Heck, I've fired single action 1911s that don't reset as quickly as the S&W's I own do. The shortest reset I've ever experienced, bar none, is on my first gen S&W model 39. I have a 6906 that's close, but that one has had a trigger job done to it, while the 39 is box stock.

You say "Beretta is the best", and that covers a number of different models; but if we're talking about the ubiquitous Beretta 92F the reset between DA and SA is nothing short of execrable, requiring nearly a full three quarters-inch of travel before the sear resets, and then you have to gather up a ton of slack before you can fire the pistol again. The only DA/SA Ruger I've ever shot with any regularity was the old P89, and its trigger was worse. I've carried Sigs such as the 220 and the 228, and if you get them with the SRT (short reset trigger) they're not bad, but they still have a reset at best of about a quarter-inch. Literally none of the S&W pistols require anywhere near so much distance to reset.

 

Just wondering - have you fired a CZ 75 Tactical Sport, and if so, what did you think of the reset?

 

While I have owned and fired CZs (specifically a CZ-75B and a P-07) I have never had the opportunity to try the Tactical Sport. I've heard really good things about that pistol, however.

 

there are plenty of good single stacks to choose from, from inexpensive to hi end SCCY CPX-2,Ruger EC9s, SW Shields, the Kahrs, Glocks, Sigs,and Walther's CCP and PPS,for me , the Taurus G2 is also a contender despite 12 rd magazine

 

My single stack is a Taurus 709 slim.

 

What's your take been on that particular pistol? Taurus' quality has been so up and down the last few years I've heard a pretty broad range of experiences regarding how well they work...

 

In the 80’s I baby sat a HK P9 and missed my chance to acquire it when you didn’t have to rob a bank to afford one. I really liked that gun, liked it’s accuracy in my hands, and despite being all steel, liked it for it’s potential for CC. Which they’d bring the design back.
While I often carry a G26 with either the 10 rd Mag or with a G19 mag with xgrips, a Techna clip, and Siderlock which is a very slim, lightweight configuration, I have grown fond of my Kahr PM9 with a Technaclip. It’s limited in capacity, but so easy to conceal and very light weight...a good summer EDC piece.

 

I've put a few hundred rounds through it. You don't want to fire 100 rounds non stop. The local law enforcement agency lists the 709 slim as an approved 2nd gun for their officers.

I'd have no issues with it being your CCW but you would want to carry a 2nd mag as with most single-stacks, you only have 6 or 7 rounds.

I have another Taurus the Millenium G2 and also a S+W 9mm which is my favorite gun to shoot as it's so balanced
