President Donald Trump says he will ask each of his Cabinet secretaries to cut 5 percent of their respective budgets, shortly after he pledged to reduce spending and lower the U.S. budget deficit.

This is the way to make America great again. Cut taxes to stimulate spending in the private sector, and cut spending to reduce the tax burden on Americans.

    Cut taxes and spending.

Here is a little history lesson on how to handle the US economy:

A little history lesson, so far Trump and the Republicans have only managed to increase the deficit, by 17% over fiscal 2017. They cut taxes (businesses and the wealthy got the vast majority) and increased spending. And they stupidly did this during a very good economy - and deficits will only increase for the next 5 years as forecast by the 2019 US federal budget by an average of $920 billion / year - the morons. Trump and the Republicans had some folks to reward though, particularly the donor class. For the record I was in favor of reducing the corporate tax rate but not to the level they dropped it. People should remember the Republican motto - deficits are only bad when a Democrat is in the White House.....speaking of Democrats, if a strong economy is desired, put a Democrat in the White House.

As usual, the theory is solid, but the Trump execution is moronic... Global blind cuts are never the way to go and you shouldn't ask the secretaries IN CHARGE of their departments to make the cuts.... They can make suggestions but the actual cuts should be decided by somebody without a horse in the race....

It's a panic move by a president who runs in panic mode 6 days out of 7.... (the other day is Executive Time, where he gets to tweet all day)...

you have clearly never been part of a large organization. Managers of each department are responsible for raining and costs in the areas they manage, get this, because those are the Departments they know. The CEO does not come in and micro manage the finances of each department. This is precisely how you do this. Government bloat is system-wide. Some departments could be cut all together would you prefer that? Would you prefer we shut down the EPA? This is how you reduce instead of Grove government. This is what we have been begging for our entire adult lives.

They are never happy. Who in their right mind would object to an attempt to cut spending?

Does anyone really think Trump or anyone else will follow through on this 5% cut nonsense? Trump threw this crap out there strictly as a mid-term effort to prop up the myth that he and the Republicans are fiscally responsible. It is quite likely we won't hear a peep about this after the mid-terms, Trump will only have 2020 on his mind (assuming he is on the ballot) and spending cuts are never a good way to sway the electorate.....

These aren't global blind cuts, they will be suggested by the Cabinet heads after consultations with their department heads but thanks for showing you have no interest in cutting spending and balancing the budgets, we'll keep it in mind next time you complain about deficits.

And I can't tell you the number of times as a business owner or manager I cut spending by exactly the same process. Those department heads who could not accomplish it were replaced. It's what you are hired to do when necessary.

    Wrong.

The secretaries know their budgets and letting someone from outside make the cuts could actually be worse.

Nice, "some" meaning lets not strip down the military to where they can't function. You knew that but chose to play comedian.

Let me throw a hypothetical (yet very probable) your way.... Suppose there is a department in the cabinet where 10% cuts could "easily" be made and another department where any cuts would be immediately detrimental to important services??

This 5% concept is just Trump simplifying things for himself and his base.... so he doesn't potentially have to make any tough decisions... I'm OK with cutting, say 25% from all his cabinets combined... Specifying 5% from each department regardless is simply not the best way to go..

Under my system, it may end up cutting 5% from each cabinet department, but lets cut things that can (or should) be cut until some benchmark is hit and see where we stand...

All of the above is with the understanding that something will actually be done about this... I'm 100% with post #7 on this topic...

I guess the same logic would apply to everything else then. Don't strip down other departments to the extent they can't function.

Maybe he should start with cutting 5% from the presidential travel budget. I wonder if he is insisting on that, too.

Not a bad point, except it opens the door to not making cuts. Excuses excuses. I was taught where there is a will...there is a way.
