If you don't work you don't eat. So not working is commiting suicide ,right? Have kids on welfare fathers go to jail on work farm or chain gang. Problem solved.

The American Dream targets the acquisition and maintenance of wealth so that a person's life is well-provided for. It also involves becoming independent from the whims and dictates of others so that they don't dominate you and steal much of what you have worked so hard to accumulate.

Thus, it centers on getting wealth and independence -- the exact opposites of dependence on a socialistic government....

The American dream is to make a simple but decent enough living where you have time enough to spend with your family and money enough to take care of the health and needs.

I want freedom from what socialists want to do to steal what I have worked for. I want independence and the ability to live my own life in peace and quiet. I make my own way in life and I want socialists and big government to leave me alone.

Sorry but every study indicates that isn't true. The best predictor of the class you end up in is the class you were born into. . That is a fact. Do some research on the GINI coefficient.

And by the way class mobility has gotten significantly worse over time.

The question was asked what the American dream was and I explained it.

The question wasn't how realistic is the American dream.

You need to pay attention to the questions.

My apologies. At least we agree that what you think is the dream is nonsense.

    Not at all.

We used to have that in America and its a great goal to strive for which is why I'm conservative.

I wish to return to that Dream.

And I'm also not saying its not possible in today's age. Hard work can go a very long way.

Will it net everyone the American Dream, of course not, but you can certainly get closer to it.

That dream was done a long time ago but of course hard work is usually required particularly if one is not born into wealth in which case significant effort is required to fail. Or should I say that the dream used to be a lot more of a reality than it is today.

And Conservative, Liberal, Republican, or Democrat, no one in power has shown any serious inclination to make any effort to equalize opportunity in America. In fact the continuing efforts of the Republicans to reduce / eliminate estate tax can be considered as a means of strengthing and perpetuating the existing class system and wealth inequality.
