Wrong ... the Ukrainian boats didn't need any permission by Russia to enter the Sea of Azov ... simply because Russia has no right to give a permission there!
And is the sea area there really Russian territory? Very questionable... even I have no problem with it that Croimea is Russian now.

Its not a US problem and we shouldn't get involved. Ukraine wants to take on Russia. Then let them do so. The one thing I don't like about the situation is the Repubs sounding off and sticking up for the Demos and the corrupt government that the Demos want to install there.

The Euros want to aid and assist Ukraine. By all means let them do so. Let Germany and France lead the way with the assist.

Just because there is some conflict on the other side of the globe doesn't mean, it's a security issue for the US.

I have not researched the subject (and will not either) and so have no depth of knowledge about this.

But I understand that the Ukrainians do have to provide notice of their intention to sail through that stretch of water, and have always done so until now - but not on this occasion. I also understand that Russia is very sensitive of that bridge following Ukrainian threats to bomb it.

The below is what former UK Ambassador stated in this regard (and he was the former Head of the British Foreign Office Maritime Section, so my guess is that he knows of what he speaks).

Thus in regard to the Kerch bridge area, Russia is de facto the coastal state and therefore has the right to designate a notification regime.

I also invite you to view an earlier post I made in this thread where I posted a copy of the Ukrainian orders (and the apparent translation) issued to the captured captain (which he apparently kept on onboard and were captured with him) instructing him to proceed "covertly", thus confirming the intention not to notify the Russians.

If this is true then it seems to me that Ukraine sought to create an international situation which had two ambitions:

    1. Trump's people could use the event (and have) to advise Trump to cancel his planned meeting with Putin today (he has).

    2. Poroshenko's popularity is low and he is likely to loose the election and so this event was used by him to invoke martial law which could be used to delay the election (possibly indefinitely). I understand Germany's Merkel has told him this is unacceptable.

Ukraine-Russia sea clash: Who controls the territorial ...
    BBC
2 days ago · It cites the fact Ukrainian vessels have free access to the Sea of Azov and Kerch Strait under the 2003 treaty with Russia that effectively makes these waters shared territory.

The Ukraine should have thought about getting into a conflict with Russia. As Russia does not have to abide by a treaty with one they are in a conflict with.

So the reality is.....the Sea of Azov is Russian Territory.

Discomfort with idiocy is not evidence in favor of that idiocy. I always got uncomfortable when one of my students insisted the moon landings were faked.

I agree, that it can be a domino effect. And certainly true about the times right after the collapse of the USSR.

Assuming facts not in evidence. Aside from my belief in Christianity I don't hold much in the way of "core beliefs".

People change as situations change. Of course there were Nazis in Russia who hated the people from the Caucasus - after all they fought 2 wars with Chechnya, and many Russians died in that war. Their attitude had to have changed when they realized their brethren in Ukraine were attacking Russians. I assume most of them came to their senses - although I don't know, but I do know that many did join the Nazis in Ukraine.

As for Chechnya and the Caucasus, the Russian attitude towards them had to have changed as well when Kadarov proved his men's willingness to support 'mother' Russia - even to the death if need be.

Look I don't know Russians, and frankly it doesn't matter to me. What I do know is what Vladimir Putin has said, and what his actions have been - and I have the utmost respect for him. This is something I do not have for the liberal 'new world order' freaks in Washington, London and Berlin who have shown their contempt for human lives and people's well being many time. Serbia, Libya, Iraq and Syria come to mind - as well as what they're doing to the Russian people in Ukraine.

As for calling the Ukrainians who commit the atrocities against the Russian/Ukrainians Nazis, it's because that's what fervent nationalists and supremacists are, so why should I mince words. I mean all you have to do is read the hatred the Ukrainian posters have towards Russia to know it's what they are. When the protesters were burned and hacked in the Trade Union Building in Odessa one poster was laughing and showed pictures of roasted chickens - pictures that were making the rounds at the time in Kiev and Western Ukraine.

The national guard formed by the junta, as well as the private militias such as Azov which have been killing and destroying civilian areas non stop, are Nazis/nationalists. They are not the average Ukrainian soldier who has qualms about killing his fellow countrymen, and who were conscripted and given only two weeks training so they can be used as cannon fodder by Poroshenko.

National supremacists consider themselves Christians too, and yet it's a sin since humility is a perquisite.

The straits are Russian on both sides, which means that any ship passing through needs permission. Ukrainian ships have been going through for a very long time, and they always asked permission - yet this time they didn't. The Ukrainians have also confiscated 14 Russian ships and taken hostages - yet no mention was ever made of it.

The Ukrainian ships also went into waters which had always been Russian, so it definitely was to provoke Russia into a reaction. As for Poroshenko, he needed an excuse to declare Marshall law since he has about an 8% approval record. Amazing how he's able to survive anything. There have been at least 3 Maidan's to oust him, but to no avail.

Then again Poroshenko does have support - probably because of his billionaires and his willingness to do what Washington wants. As Putin said, the West would give him babies to eat if he wanted them. Anyway besides declaring Marshall Law over the elections, the American 'deep state' somehow manages in some way or another to cancel any meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin.

I'll hazard a guess that no mention is made of it because it never happened.

Might makes right, as long as you're an authoritarian regime that stands up to America and NATO and their crazy attempts to enforce human rights and international law and order.
