Just a question. There are a number of highways connecting the US and Mexico with significant commercial travel. (I understand that the drugs come in by truck and very little by illegal immigrant.) How many roads and highways connect Israel and Gaza? How much traffic or commerce connect the two? Also, Israel and Gaza are enemies. That is somewhat of a difference.

We certainly could use a wall or better fence in appropriate areas to control illegal immigration. More importantly, we need a system that is efficient, reasonable and compassionate in dealing with potential immigrants. We also need a reasonable program for dreamers and longer term illegal immigrants to stay and become citizens.

 

I am under the impression that you keep backtracking. At first you said we should have a wall like Israel. Then when I pointed out that they have a fence, not a wall, you are now pivoting that we have holes in our southern border with no fence. No wonder you like Trump, you say what you want regardless if it is true or makes sense.

Naturally I assumed you thought our entire southern border was also fenced. Glad we straightened that out.

Now as to your second argument:

We can indeed learn a lot from Israel and a huge concrete barrier is not essential along our entire border just as it isn't in Israel. The democrats base projected cost to build the wall on this fallacious scenario. Just like Israel we could tailor the wall to different areas based on geography and proximity to urban populations and or extraction points. The cost of the border wall would be much less than forecast when you take into account the fact that much of it only needs to be a very tall very stout fence with motion detectors built in like Israel has. This way any breach would be instantly detected and border guards could be immediately dispatched to the point of incursion to apprehend the intruders. After a while people would quit even trying when it became obvious their attempts were going to be fruitless.

 

Sounds like you are shopping for a way to let illegals in and then legalize them. Why not just secure our border and keep them out?

 

I am not shopping for a way to let illegals in, but we can certainly do a better and more efficient job of processing the immigrants who arrive at our border. We don't need to lock up their children while the parents wait for months for a decision. Also, I think that anyone who has been in this country for 10 years and has been a "good" resident should be allowed to apply for citizenship. If they don't want to be a citizen of the US, they then should go back to where they want to be a citizen.

 

Securing our border will do zip to stop the majority of illegals who enter the US 100% legally through establish border crossings.

 

I have no idea who your "left" is that speaks through you, but, no, most Americans do not want Trump's wall that he repeatedly promised Mexico would pay for.

We have a legal system of imigration and showing up at our borders demanding entry is not it.

 

But it will stop the teens of thousands that cross our southern border illegally. Other forms of illegal immigration will require other solutions.

 

You are the one who made it sound like “securing our border” is the solution to keeping illegals out. It most definitely will not do that.

 

Securing our borders is the solution to keeping illegals from coming in through our borders. Other forms of illegal entry also need adressed. Are you proposing there is one solution to all forms of illegal access into our country? If so I'd love to hear it.
What I think you are doing is trying to hide behind an absurd argument that since border security won't stop 100% of illegal immigration we shouldn't secure our borders.

 

Illegals crossing our border is a minority problem not worth the cost (in dollar terms, in government power terms from having to use the largest eminent domain seizure in US history, and in environmental damage terms) of building, maintaining, and manning a wall.

 

Teens need more exercise. Climbing ladders and digging tunnels provides it.

We ALREADY have far more wall built than the Israeli wall which is only 400 miles long.We have 10,000 miles of open coastline which can easily be trespassed in addition to the 2,000 mile plus land crossing from Mexico and the 2,000 plus mile long Canadian land border.

 

Interesting opinion. Care to back it up with facts and crunch the numbers? How many illegals in America got here by crossing the border illegally? How much has it cost for their healthcare, education and welfare programs such as food stamps. How many are or have been in our prison system and what has that cost. Do the math on that over the last twenty years and then figure the cost of the wall being built and keeping it up for twenty years then get back to me.

Just as you lock your front door since it's the easiest point of access you secure the southern border since it's the easiest point of access for people fleeing shithole countries to our south.

In medieval times, such walls were effective. Most major cities — including London, Paris and Jerusalem — had them.
