If you are going to use a commandment from the old testament, then this quote applies.

American Catholics don't blindly follow the dictates of Rome.

Yes I do. I do not accept that the Pope is right on this while there are those who do not think for themselves will take his word as 'gospel'. Pun fully intended.

Death-row prisoners in the U.S. typically spend more than a decade awaiting execution. Some prisoners have been on death row for well over 20 years. Along with numerous appeals how much do you think that costs, and to be held for twenty years in solitary confinement is nothing more than day by day torture.

The Pope has made the correct choice in this.

I agree that the time gap between the sentencing and the actual execution needs to be way short than it is now.

I think that he is wrong on that point...........

Mark 3:4 "And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace."

I am almost certain that Rabbi Jesus/Yehoshua was referring to the situation faced by the Machabees when Greco - Syrian armies were attacking Jewish communities on the Sabbath.

One community had refused to fight back....but the Machabees....in my opinion correctly judged that this is a violation of an admonition by King Solomon:

Ecclesiastes 7:16 "Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?"

Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible, First Book Of Machabees Chapter 2

In these days of forensics and DNA, that's so highly unlikely as to be impossible.

Today on youtube, I spent a bit of time watching our Army execute both by firing squad to hanging Germans that were tried at Nuremberg along with being walked to a post and simply shot to death.

I won't post the youtube but my gosh, back then FDR sure knew how to deal with war crimes.

Take the hangings. The drop was so far the germans did not even twitch.

The shooting of the Germans snuffed out their lives so fast, unlike the movies of Hollywood, those shot did not flop all over the place or slowly manage a dramatic death.

Nope the Germans shot tumbled to the ground like a log cut from a tree.

Not a one of the Germans had any drama. Bang and the dude simply flopped down on the ground. We did not even tie them to the stake.

It was amazing watching the Germans walk fast to be executed and take it like a man.

Pope Francis says lots of things, many of them wrong and out of alignment with Christian doctrine.
The Commandment, “Thou shalt not kill” refers to unlawful killing, not lawful killing This is obvious when you read the rest of The Bible. God not only condones righteous killing, He participated in it. He killed two sons of Aaron who disobeyed Him. He had another disobedient family swallowed by an opening in the earth. He directed the Israelites to kill all the inhabitants of the city of Ai, even including their herds and flocks.
The death penalty is not unlawful so it is not forbidden by God.
I think the death penalty is wrong, not because of religious conviction but because I think it coarsens us as a people. Murder is usually a crime of passion. Executions are a crime of vengeance. Murders take place in the moment. Executions usually take place years or decades after the crime. They are cold, dispassionate killings. There is no emotion when the state kills someone. It is almost like a business decision.

    Wow!!!!!

This is an exceptionally good answer to this topic.

A friend of mine recently spoke to me about the case of Son of Sam and stated that that particular murderer had a massive change of heart while he was in prison...... which is also an important reason to choose life in prison with no chance of parole over the death penalty.
