“Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for standing up for the self-evident truth Americans hold so dear, that no matter what the color of our skin or the place of our birth, we are all created equal by God,” he tweeted.

In his proclamation, Trump noted that in the past two years, more than 5 million new jobs have been added and unemployment rates for African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Americans without a high school diploma reached record lows.

He also noted signing the First Step Act, a criminal justice reform bill, last year.

“More than half a century after Dr. King’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, our Nation is mindful of its past, and we look forward to the future with unwavering optimism, inspired by the legacy of Dr. King and informed by his wisdom and vision,” the proclamation read. “May the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the efforts we have made to fully effectuate his dream, remind us that faith and love unite us together as one great American family.”

Trump honored the famous Republican Dr. King and reminds us all why his words were so important.

Would MLK jr recognize America today?

What would he think of the new lefts take on race?

I think Dr. King would be thrilled with record low black unemployment and prison reform as well.

    He'd be a Trump supporter.

He would have voted for Trump as Trump has the same ideals and believes in equality, unlike most of the Democrats serving in government.

LMAO, MLK was an out-loud socialist, wtf are you talking about?

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The “best man” at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade."

April Fool's Day isn't here yet.

Save the Fantastical (Utterly Ludicrous) attempts at COMEDY until April 1st.

    Thanks in advance.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You guys are hilarious. Yeah, I'm sure that Dr. King would've TOTALLY loved the guy that called for the death penalty for five black youths, and is the antithesis of his views on love and greed. TOTALLY.

True, and Trump isn't anti religion like the left.

    King's descendants support Trump.

Alveda King defends Trump against racism accusations: Black Americans are benefiting from his presidency

and he isn't racist like the left or the #MSM who thrives on destroying people for alleged crimes while ignoring their own, real, criminal activity.

MLK would disavow the Soviet and Nazi style tactics that have become so common among leftist/progressive lawmakers and ardent sheep. It's a pity that they ended "his dream" by actually infusing racism and inequality into American lives instead of embracing his message and following his principles.

... First off, Alveda King isn't even a direct descendant of Dr. King, she's a niece. Secondly, even if she was a direct descendant, her word doesn't carry weight for her deceased uncle. Third, one collateral descendant, who is also a Fox News contributor, doesn't mean ALL of King's descendants support Trump.

He'd be thrilled at how Trump was able to get African-Americans back to work after the Obama admin.

Reverend King was very religious, a Republican, and supported the nuclear family. Of course he supported the party of abolition. The KKK was a democrat hate group.

Lets see what MLK himself, his family, and this Pastor have to say about it...

Nothing funny about Coretta Scott King having to call Nixon when MLK was arrested. She didn't trust dems because Kennedy was spying on her.

She also remembered it took another Republican, Eisenhower to racially integrate public school in democrat states.

First off, Alveda King recanted this claim in 2013.

"I have few regrets in my life. At the top of the list is the demise of two children in my womb, and one miscarriage. Next to that, I regret having said to a group of peers that my Uncle M. L. (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) was a Republican. I said that without having all the facts. My Grandfather, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. was a registered Republican. Uncle M. L. was an independent, who in his own words tended to vote Democrat. I assumed that since Granddaddy was a Republican, Uncle M. L. was too.”

    -Alveda King

MLK wasn't a fan of EITHER party, and he made it abundantly clear.

"Actually, the Negro has been betrayed by both the Republican and the Democratic party. The Democrats have betrayed him by capitulating to the whims and caprices of the Southern Dixiecrats. The Republicans have betrayed him by capitulating to the blatant hypocrisy of reactionary right wing northern Republicans. And this coalition of southern Dixiecrats and right wing reactionary northern Republicans defeats every bill and every move towards liberal legislation in the area of civil rights."

    -MLK

The fact that you're desperately trying to make King align with your view is frankly disgusting.

Something Democrats were very much against. KKK, which they founded and supported financially and with new Democrat members, were called in to harass these citizens to try and prevent equality for all.

It is something Democrats try to sweep under the rug, especially now, as they try and revise their history.

    It's really pathetic.

Democrat/leftist policies have destroyed the black family.

Trumps defense of religion, strong economic policies, and prison reform measures would ALL be welcomed by MLK.

    Seriously pathetic.

There was even a democrat president who viewed KKK movies in the white house.

So, you're not going to address that you're misconstruing his words to show that he "supported" the Republican Party, when in fact MLK was very independent on BOTH political parties and made that abundantly clear, AND that one of your "key" pieces of evidence has been recanted by the original claimant? You're just going to keep claiming that it's true because you THINK it MIGHT be true?

Trying to pigeonhole a dead person's beliefs into alignment with your own, despite troves of evidence to the contrary, might be one of the sleaziest and lamest things that a person could do.

I agree with you, I think Dr. King would be thrilled to see how blacks have benefited under Trump's presidency.

(I also think back in the day he would have told Obama to sit down, shut up, and quit racebaiting and pushing race relations back half a century. And own your own damn mistakes and quit pretending your critics are all racists. Damn you were a disappointment as the first black President.) :p

I have a lot of respect for MLK ---- which is partly why I came to despise Obama so much.

That was a classy tweet from Trump.

My god you guys don't even deal in realities anymore, just imagined interactions between a dead man and a former president. How utterly pathetic "intellectualism" is in this country.

The unemployment rate for African Americans stayed well above double digits most of his time in office.
