I voted that humans are the most advanced because there is absolutely no evidence that would support the notion that there is any non-terrestrial intelligent life in the universe at all. I have read quite a bit about astronomy and biology and the more I learn about the likelihood of intelligent life on other planets the more I subscribe to the rare earth hypothesis.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_Earth_hypothesis

Basically there are two schools of thought on this subject; the infinite probability hypothesis which is championed by the likes of Carl Sagan in which reasonable men hypothesize that there are a lot of stars out there, and with each star there is a chance there are planets, and each planet has a chance of life occurring. If you add up all those chances, then the likelihood of intelligent life is almost a sure thing. This hypothesis is supported by almost no evidence other than the notion that if you get enough chances at anything, eventually you might get lucky.

The rare earth hypothesis is a hard science look at the probability of intelligent life. This theory looks at all stars and evaluates the chances that these stars can have planets. Of course, most stars are inside the influence of a black hole in the center of a universe and do not have planets. Stars in globular clusters almost never have planets. Stars in the leading edges of spiral arms of galaxies cannot support life for a variety of reasons, even if they have planets. So even if there are billions of stars in the galaxy, there are only a miniscule percentage of stars on the galaxy rim at the extreme trailing edge of a spiral arm of the galaxy that even have a chance of life of any kind, much less intelligent life, so even if there are billions of stars in galaxy, there are only several hundred thousand in an entire galaxy which can sustain life. If you read the article about the Rare Earth Hypothesis, you then take those few candidates for life and factor in thousands of factors which could prevent life from happening, and pretty soon, if you are able to do probability math, you will soon see that intelligent life may be unique to our planet.

We have enough a$$holes on this planet to deal with. Let's hope any alien life has evolved pass this..

An exceptionally good reply... thank you.... but what I actually now believe was the first cause of intelligence in the universe / multiverse was actually an extra-dimensional life form...... not really extra-terrestrial.

There are many correlations between this account by near death experiencer and former Atheist Mellen Benedict with chapter 13 of "Stephen Hawking's Universe" that is entitled The Anthropic Principle. He goes into an Agnostic - Atheistic version of the Cyclic Model of the Universe in that chapter but........
what he writes sure does resemble:

    https://www.near-death.com/reincarnation/experiences/mellen-thomas-benedict.html#a05
My own conclusion..... an extra-dimensional "Alien" Intelligence has evolved...... and learned over infinite time in the past......... and Big Bang events were actually to a significant degree planned and choreographed.

I can appreciate that Mellen Benedict can take that position and it shows a great deal of courage in openly expressing that opinion. Even so, with a lack of any empirical evidence, and if you believe in faith, that is not going to be grounds for dismissal of Mr. Benedicts hypothesis and observations, then it seems like we are left with a choice. Do we take Mellen Benedict at his word? I so no reason why one shouldn't at least consider that Mr. Benedict is telling the truth. But even if he is telling the truth, is the recollection of someone who is going through a near death experience something that we should place a lot of trust in.

Consider this, in a near death experience, the body and the brain are facing trauma, ridiculous amounts of endocrines, including adreneline, possible oxygen starvation, confusion, possible terror and a whole host of other factors which would produce doubt of anyone's testimony. The similarity of a disparate group of cases who had near death experience could be explained away by the idea that this is simply what dying is like, and it may have no meaning at all.

In this instance, it would seem to me that the principle of Occum's Razor, would favor the notion that the process of dying does some weird things to one's mind, and near death experiences should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism.

probably not, the question is, can we survive ourselves, once AI takes over, what happens to the poorer that no longer have jobs, do they get left behind, then revolt

does someone create a killer human virus in retaliation?

    do countries use nukes?

do we ruin the climate or use up all our resources?

how many other civilizations have survived these issues

I agree..... I began a Facebook group entitled "Near Death Experiences bring us Together" several years ago and a high percentage of near death experiencers take about a decade to get to the place where they feel confident to speak or write about what they remember of being in the out of the body state.

Near death experiencers tend to be in a state of AWE over what happened to them!

Howard Storm resigned his position as Head of the Art Department at a university to go back to become qualified as a theologian .... Bruce F. MacDonald Ph. D. quit his job as a United Church pastor to become a professor of English literature so that he could more effectively research what had happened to him..... and what he had been shown about what really was happening here on this third rock.

We're the Somalia of the Orion Arm. A bunch of jumped up plains apes that are hardly housebroken, much less ready for civilized society. Still getting our fingers caught in the machinery and burning down the barn to get rid of the rats.

    Well said........
if there is nobody better than us out there.......
then who can assist us to not blow ourselves up along with many of the other life forms on this planet?

Given both the size of the universe and the age of the universe and that we have only started to go down the road to technology and science the likelihood that we are top dogs in the universe seems near zero.

Frankly I have to play the odds.

There are hundreds of billions of galaxies each with hundreds of billions of stars.

Let's simplify the numbers and say that there are 100 billion galaxies with 100 billion stars each. That's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars.

If one in one-billion of those stars has life of some sort, that's 100,000,000,000,000 star systems with life. If one in one-billion of those has intelligent life...that's 100,000 stars with intelligence. Now since the actual numbers are higher still...that's a lot of intelligences out there.

Now the distances may make it a moot point as to whether we'll ever have a chance to meet them or even know if they exist or not...but I do believe that they're out there. Life can't be that uncommon and just because we haven't found it elsewhere on our little cluster of dirtballs orbiting the sun doesn't mean that they aren't out there somewhere.

In a way that is true but.... what if this life is like a job interview... and what if our next role
is even beyond most of the roles in the Star Trek series????
