Hmm... Here is another idea for handing out money to the people. Before this, I assumed that the only way to get a UBI in the USA was to get Andrew Yang elected as president, but I might be wrong. Any progressive president could do this. I'm still going to vote for Andrew Yang, but I now feel relief over possibly not getting a Yang presidency.

So you want to give everyone with a job 10,000 a year and pay for it by charging everyone an 11% tax on all goods they buy?

And if people still don't want to work you have a plan to convert this easily into a check for everyone, whether you work or not, for 10,000 which is ultimately the goal here.

There are people making 30k a year living in poverty but somehow you think raising someone from 20k a year to 30k a year is going to be some sort of great fix?

And in the meantime everyone has to pay higher prices to keep people in poverty?

    It won't.

What this will be is the foundation to keep upping that paycheck to them and raising taxes on everyone else.

Once that door is open you can't close it again.

    No thanks.

I don't want to be paying a 50% tax on stuff to give everyone a 40k free paycheck every year which is ultimately what will happen here.

Is there an instance where you are okay paying 50% tax? Like rebuilding the whole infrastructure? Universal Healthcare? 200k/y pensions?

UBI is going to cost us 3.8 trillion per year according to economists.

Give me how much you think it will cost yearly for the following programs over a 1-year or 10-year period if you support them?
    UBI:
    Medicare for all:
    Green New Deal:
    Student Debt Forgiveness:
    Free College:
    Free Daycare:
    Fixing Social Security:
    Reparations:

That 3.8 trillion is the cost of a universal UBI, right? As in every adult receives money?

Well, from what I understand, this proposal is for a negative income tax. In other words, it only benefits the poor below a certain income level.i

No matter how they try to hide redistribution of wealth behind other names it's still redistribution of wealth.

Yang is proposing $12,000 dollars for every US citizen over the age of 18. There are about 255 million adults. That comes out to 3.06 trillion for this year. That number will certainly increase in the future with a rising population and inflation.

Is there a nation that's tried UBI that didn't end it?

Until the day comes where practically everything is automated, UBI is a no go.

But until then, the government could leave people's paychecks alone. I could do alot with the near 25% I lose every pay period.

America is insane if it does this. You think you have problems now .. just wait til those who want everything to come easy, are paid to stand still. "Poverty" will increase, not decrease. Less people will engage with productivity, and more money will be spent on consumables and depreciating assets (not to mention gambling, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol etc).

Until someone reinvents human nature, a UBI will be an unmitigated disaster.

Free money has never once taken a single person out of poverty. Even most lottery winners end up poor again in a very short time.

The day that happens the advancement and will of the human race dies, helping the disabled and elderly is one thing a humane nation makes provisions for but work is still ideal I wish they assigned me some part-time work for my SSI check its better than a handout for breathing. Maybe it would be best to not automate much more the government could ban it for the good of society maybe a UN Treaty.

Before you can subjugate a population, you need to establish dependence..

A right-wing fear. Or even paranoia? Lot's of people depend on the government. It hasn't resulted in subjugation.
