Other charges against pederson relate to how he did his job before the shooting

The investigation was very through and would not have happened if the previous sherif were still in office and a democrat were governor of florida

The anguish and anger is understandable and I can see why people want to charge him.

I agree he failed massively and is partly responsible for those people being murdered

He should have been fired but I do not see how he can be convicted of a crime

I have no idea what he was thinking but we know many cops are held accountable for taking proper action such as Darren Wilson did when he shot Micheal Brown

Now we are charging cops when they do not do anything and charging them when they do.

I am no lawyer but I have read a few precedents where police departments in general cannot be held accountable for failing to enforce the law. Those were civil suits and not criminal charges nor were they directed against a specific officer.

Of anyone knows of a precedent for this I'd love to hear it.

I think a good lawyer will beat this and the deputy should be acquitted

That does not mean I excuse his failure however. He behaved shamefully but I can't think of it as a crime to be a coward.

His direct non-response is not criminal. The courts have held on multiple occasions that no one can be compelled to put them themselves in harms' way - not even cops. Having not looked at them, I'd guess the charges are regarding his ancillary duties.

And a lot of them probably will, along with the fact that it's going to become VERY difficult to fill those jobs

Security people are expected to protect THEMSELVES first and foremost. The idea is they keep everybody safe ALONG WITH themselves. If you are risking your own life you are risking others.

Additionally this is attracting exactly the wrong type of person for this job. Brave people make the worst guards is proverbial wisdom

The firings have already begin Sheriff Tony has canned just about everybody involved with hiring or supervising Peterson and other deputies involved in Parkland, 14 total, including 9 high level administrators and yesterday fired Peterson and his immediate supervisor.

Even though Peterson retired the day after Parkland, by being ordered back to BSO and then being fired he has now lost his state pension and can never work in law enforcement ever again.

After he was fired he was taken into custody and charged with 11 counts, 7 felonies for child neglect with great bodily harm $15k bail each, 3 counts culpable negligence exposure to harm $1k bail each and 1 count of perjury $1.5K bail.

The Feds are also investigating former Sheriff Scott Israel and certain members of the Broward County School Board, it is alleged grant money that was supposed be used to harden schools was laundered through the BSO and diverted into a program that prevented students from being charged with crimes leaving them with criminal records.

The Parkland shooter was sent to that program for committing a felony aggravated battery on campus, however Cruz skipped out on attending the program yet was still not charged which he should have been.

Peterson and the school Principal abandoned the building and retreated to a safe area.

No all of the charges excepting the perjury charge where based on Peterson failing to do his job and engage the shooter that day.

The investigation began while the previous Sheriff Scott Israel was in office, Israel was removed by the incoming Florida Governor DeSantis.

He was not a security person, he was a Deputy and took an oath to protect the public which he shirked from doing, as such he was charged for that and considering the number of charges stacked against him which the SA approved he will take a plea and do a few years in prison.

None the less fighting the charges will cost him everything he worked for and by being fired he has lost his pension leaving him with no income and a criminal record.

Really, then please explain why Coral Springs Police went into the school even though is was not in their jurisdiction, while BSO stood down.

Anyone who votes not guilty on any of the charges is a worthless human.

I think gun advocates should be VERY concerned about this. If it going this direction, it may not only be security staff who will be charged with neglect, but also armed bystanders, if they decide to hide rather than engage an active shooter. This would be similar of being charged for failure to assist a car accident victim under good samaritan laws. Maybe that will prompt gun advocates to think twice before running around always armed, then forcing them to become a hero in a mass shooting incident.

Personally, I think this arrest is wrong. We know from studies of actions of soldiers in the war zone that less than 30% actually ever engage the enemy. And those are trained people. To think that an untrained security guard has the skill and will to take on an active shooter is just delusion. It is always easy to shout "coward" when it comes to people behavior in such situations. However, more likely that not most of us will be "cowards" and hide, rather than engaging the shooter, with or without weapon.

Which is the card the SA will play and to offer Peterson a very generous plea bargain, probably let him agree to plead guilty to one of the felonies and the perjury charge hit with a minimum sentence (a few years upstate) and close the case.

His alternative is to fight the charges which will bankrupt him in legal fee's and he still might lose.

Deputies or Security people all the same in re common sense. The CS police went in because there were considerably more than ONE of them

I'm sorry. I am forgetting the most crucial thing here, aren't I. This guy was ALONE, He had NOBODY to watch his back. I can't think of ANY common sense protocols that say you should go into any building where you have heard shots fired under those circumstances. At BEST you may draw the shooter's fire to kill you and give someone else a chance to get away but even that probably won't work and you are far more likely to just get shot and draw others in hiding out and into harm's way.

You people have been watching too many movies.

Probably will never happen, citizens unlike Deputies are not sworn to protect the public and cannot be held accountable for their inactions.

The problem is he was not an untrained security guard, he was a sworn Deputy working a school security detail, he was placed there to prevent or stop what he ran away from.

Incorrect the first CSPD officer went in alone, as other 94's showed up they did the same CSPD SWAT didn't show up until 11 minutes later.

Meanwhile BSO stood down and twiddled their thumbs while their Commander was so confused she set up roadblocks instead of going in.

She has since been fired, meaning no pension and no future as a LEO.

Was somebody covering the first CSPD officer when he went in alone? They don't have to actually be going with him, in fact I don't think they should

The idea is that if somebody starts shooting at the officer going in the covering officer can shoot at them, which saves the first guy, if the first guy has no covering fire he usually can't get away in time.

It sound like this PD wants everyone to be Dirty Harry, a good movie but poor actual police work.

    Disagree with you A. U.

I hope I would have the guts to go in and try to save students.

    S P froze. Period.

You know he retired the same week of the shooting incident. If he is convicted, he will lose his pension. I certainly hope so.

Nope, we saw him get out of his car, he opened the trunk put on body armor and went in alone, about 40 seconds later two more units arrived and did the same thing, once inside the school they fanned out and began searching for Cruz.

His $8700 per month pension is now history, by going back to BSO and being fired that cost him his pension, he should have lawyered up first, but didn't, to which I say TFB.

No you sure do not know every detail about what happened there. Welcome to the club--no member of the public knows what really happened there, we know only the story that has been told.

Peterson is taking the fall for a huge deception advancing the agenda of gun control.

Did Pedersen have body armor on? Was it even available to him?

We don't hire people to be heroes, not even cops and firemen, hell, not even combat soldiers are expected to be brave, that's why we give them medals when they are.

every second you waste not acting is another dead student
if you are concerned a police officer cant distinguish friend from foe they need better training and if you are concerned about the safety of the officers its their job to put themselves at risk to save the lives of others especially children
