'This is an unacceptable thing': Community is up in arms after neighbor installs giant swastika in front yard

Steve Johnson — long-time resident of an El Sobrante, Calif. neighborhood claimed that the display is for aesthetic purposes, and was never intended to be offensive. "It doesn’t represent anything," Johnson told NBC Bay Area. "That represents me not having to pull weeds over in that part of my yard; that’s what it represents to me. What does it represent to you?"

Aww... he almost had me with the whole 'weed pulling' thing, but I'm not sure this is the way to go here, Steverino....

What does it represent to me?? Uhhh.... Seriously Steve?? You wanna take a poll?

I understand that over time, certain things associated with that time period will lose their evil significance (Hell, we had TV comedies about POW camps within 20 years of the end of the war), but I don't think the swastika will ever lose it's significance.

Can anybody support this?? I'm basically a Libertarian and support individual rights, but there still have to be general neighborhood rules and decency.

It's his property and his money, plus I'm told people don't have a right not to be offended, so his neighbors will have to live with it. But good luck selling the house later on.

Maybe someone should notify the Coronado Naval Base that someone might be offended by their ergonomic building design:

They can notify The Wesley Acres Methodist retirement home while they are at it:

In a different interview, he indicated that the display has historic significance, but is not a Nazi symbol.

You do realize that the swastika is not necessarily a Nazi symbol, yeah?

Which is exactly what he said.

"I've designed a garden that allows easy access to every side!!"
    "Dude. . .that's a swastika"
" o_O" (cue the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme music)

Well, I hope he's able to afford 24x7 security cameras on it, because I'm guessing there are stores that stock pick axes and spray paint nearby and I don't see many fences protecting his property..

    LOL at selling the house...

Exclusive privacy on 5 acres in gated Chenal Downs. Nestled in woods overlooking ponds, complete w/neighborhood trails & equestrian center. Privilege of 5min to Promenade/Kroger & 20min to Downtown. Chef's kitchen/open to family room, separate formal living/dining w/vaulted ceilings, game room, media room, gracious pool/patio, walk-in wine pantry -- all suited to fine entertaining. Giant concrete nazi symbol in front yard. Master suite w/ luxury bath, closets & fireplace (adjacent to library).

Looks to me like it could only be seen from a helicopter. I can not see any reason why this is a problem. What if a Jew put one of those stars in his landscape and a Palestinian neighbor was offended...Tough sh*t. Get over it. Where does it end? We either have private property rights or we don’t.

I walked by the building every day for about half a year, and I had no idea it was a big ol' Adolph.

From street level, it would never register with you.

Maybe he's just a spiritually minded guy. Then again, he also sports a nazi style helmet when riding his Harley.

I actually saw a bunch of bikers the other day wearing those. A few of them were black.

I thought it was odd. Guess not.

We all have private property rights, but they are not absolute....If you live out in the woods or an isolated farm, you can get away with a lot more than if you live in a town or community, which looks like what this is

    upload_2019-6-7_13-28-50.png

I live in an HOA-run community and they come by every year to tell me and my neighbors to paint, trim, repair, and power wash all sorts of stuff... It's for the common good of all of us and I rarely hear much complaining because we know that.

I'm was tempted to ping my HOA how they would handle this theoretical problem, but I don't want to become the neighborhood NAZI...

My wife manages a local hotel. Some tourists staying at the motel asked her to call the police because someone had vandalized a car with a swastika. It was the owners car, they are Hindu and they just bought the car so it was intended as a religious blessing.

Now that I get THIS view of the overall house AND the owner, I'm guessing 'weed pulling' isn't at the top of his daily to-do list....

Hard to say what his intent is given it doesn’t exactly look like the Nazi flag. Certainly made his yard look horrendous though. Might be in for some trouble if he lives in an HOA.

So they permanently (??) damaged the outside of their own car with a symbol they likely know is ALSO a symbol of hatred around the world??

That's not too bright a move, IMHO.... Not sure why you couldn't add the same symbol inside the car where few would see it..

The guy is obviously making some kind of statement. The question is whether or not there is a law governing his neighborhood regarding that statement. It should be interesting to see what happens.

If you want to be able to "do something" about your neighbor's private property you'll need to be on land subject to deed restrictions which create a property owner's association allowing for such interference.

If not? Sit and spin. Freedom isn't supposed to be unoffensive, see Brandenburg v Ohio.
