If you are libertarian, why do you think those neighbors are entitled to live free from offensive symbolism sitting on someone else's property? Let the neighbors be offended. Let them gossip and disinvite, and let them refuse to serve them in the local restaurant, or fix their plumbing when asked. ( At present discrimination based on political affiliation is still tolerated in virtually every jurisdiction) But why do they get a neighborhood rule banning his political expression? Not in 1st Amendment cases. In 1st Amendment cases, the Supreme Court applies what it calls strict scrutiny, and the party it applies strict scrutiny to is the government. Very few laws limiting speech ever make it past strict scrutiny. Attempting to ban the display of the swastika would be struck down in no time. Most of the examples you offered would run afoul of public decency laws, and wouldn't count as free speech.

It's his property. I don't buy it that he thinks it's a symbol of life but if people don't like it then don't look in his yard. I think he's intentionally being an ass. It's a slippery slope. The Constitution doesn't guarantee that another person's speech won't be offensive.

Honestly, I think HOA's should be banned as improper interference with property and speech rights. Laws against noise pollution (blasting your stereo or letting your dog bark) should be toughened up, though.
