    "Not true"

    Please elaborate.

"Not relevant who has the right of way."

Your comment is true, but not relevant.

If they were parallel, than they wouldnt have collided. They would have collided until the Russians changed course.

    Indeed.

It is relevant. The Russians had the right of way, not the Americans.
That the Americans had a chopper in the air is not relevant to who has the right of way.
The Americans complain, but THEY had to yield to the ship coming from starboard.
Such are the rules. They refused to comply, hence they are in the wrong. It's as simple as that.

So as someone who knows about this topic not from the "google" but from an actual military experience can you tell who is right here who is wrong and why?

Beats me. I was an engineering guy. I kept the lights on and the screws spinning. You'd have to ask the guys who drive the boats.

Oh, and another one I just remembered. We were in the Okhotsk during the same deployment, and Russian MiGs(not sure how many, but it was multiple MiGs) flew really really close to our ship and intentionally went supersonic and blasted us with sonic booms.

It scared the bejesus out of us, and our ears were ringing for days.

    Dirty rooskies.

"If they were parallel, than they wouldnt have collided. They would have collided until the Russians changed course."

The American position is that they were parallel UNTIL the Russian ship turned left and drove at the American ship.

You can see on the photo that the Russians made a straight line, by the way the water is flowing behind the ship,... to than see them making a sharp turn right before the could have his the US ship who never turned. And it still is so,... that a ship must yield to starboard. The Russian ship as at the US starboard side. It simply is.

Really doesn't matter....the point is if the Russki wanna play chicken, tough guy, whatever, let them start firing. Well We'll send it to the bottom, their navy no match for ours. We've rolled the dice on them before nothing happened.

Just like their jets buzzing our boats.....you can be assured they were "locked on" the whole time.

It is very relevant on to who has the right of way. a ship in restricted maneuvering has the right of way over ships that are not.

The point is who is right, and who is wrong. And basic rules on the water point out the US being dead wrong.

Not seeing any difference in maneuvering worth mentioning between the 2.

Dude... it's just basic thing of the other boat comes at your starboard side, so that boat has the right of way.
You probably learn that on your first lesson when you want to rent your random motorboat.

They would have been in contact with the Russians, the Russians choose to ignore them, when in doing flight operations or anytime you are in restricted maneuvering you have the day shapes on the mast showing that and they can be seen for miles though the high power binoculars that are on ships.

LMFAO all you are doing is showing you have no clue.
    https://www.jag.navy.mil/distrib/instructions/COLREG-1972.pdf
Lloyd’s Register Rulefinder 2005 – Version 9.4 COLREGS - International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea - International Regulations for preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 - Rule 3 General definitions Rule 3 General definitions. For the purpose of these Rules, except where the context otherwise requires:
(a). The word “vessel” includes every description of water craft, including non-displacement craft, WIG craft and seaplanes, used or capable of being used as a means of transportation on water.
(b). The term “power-driven vessel” means any vessel propelled by machinery.
(g). The term “vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre” means a vessel which from the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel. The term “vessels restricted in their ability to manoeuvre” shall include but not be limited to:
    (iv). a vessel engaged in the launching or recovery of aircraft;
So as you can see it is the duty of the ship that has full maneuverability to avoid the ship with restricted maneuverability and pass at a safe distance and speed. the Russians failed to do so.

I suspect that these are the same people who proclaim that THE RUSSIANS! are evil conspirators with Trump. I wonder if they realize, or care, how ridiculous they appear to be.

I see no difference in maneuverability between the 2. Also, that helicopter was filming it all from a nice comfy distance. We got the pictures from the chopper as proof.

so you disagree with international law good for you , please tell everyone your international navigational experience. love to hear it.
I have helped navigate ships in the straights of Malacca, the Persian gulf, sailed the north Atlantic, the Med, the Caribbean, the Pacific ect.
Russians have been doing the BS for decades, your complete lack of knowledge of the subj is amazing and when shown proof that you have no knowledge instead of learning you deny and still repeat your disproven and uneducated opinion. that is sad.

That might be the case, we don’t know if American ship contacted Russians. My opinion is based on 2 stupid collisions from last year that demonstrated arrogance of the navy captains. Judging from the helicopter pictures they were really far out, so Russians might have reasoned that they have the right of way.

I’m not a supporter of Russia or a Russian apologist, but sometimes Russians can be in the right, which seems to be the case now. Even if Americans were right, having choppers so far out from the ship, American ship captain could just be wiser, slowed down and allowed Russians to pass. Dick measuring contests on high seas don’t mean anything but a few personal egos.

I dispute your "reality". I know Americans got an issue with that alternative facts,... which is just flat out lying.

You claim the chopper was landing,... while we got that chopper making pictures from a compfy distance. There is nothing to dispute about that. And your reply ignores it. How petty.

As part of my navigational experience:
It's not the first time a US ship fails to yield to other ships from the starboard side. The stupidity before got a bunch of US sailors killed, and others convicted for their part of neglect leading to the death of people.

The Americans don't say they are above the law. They say everyone should honor the law, including themselves.
Chinese and Russian jets buzzing allied aircraft, even screaming through carrier groups, is hardly American
    arrogance.
