Yemen is a pretty backward place. I was just reading a Reuters report of September 10, 2013, that reported that an eight-year-old Yemeni bride had died of internal bleeding on her wedding night (as reported by Arwa Othman, head of Yemen House of Folklore). "On the wedding night and after intercourse, she suffered from bleeding and uterine rupture which caused her death." She was in an arranged marriage with a 40 year-old man. Yemeni officials, not surprisingly, denied the incident, but Reuters said it had contacted villagers who confirmed the story. Yemen has already been condemned in the past over its child brides because of the book "I Am Nujood" about ten-year-old Nujood Ali, who was the first child bride to procure a divorce.

But for religious muslims, it's not such a simple thing to just celebrate a holiday on the next day. Even when it's under threat of death. The Sunni and Shiite in Iraq fought over this same thing, and in the end the Shiites executed Saddam Hussein on the same day as the Sunni celebration Eid al-Ahda just to send a jabbing message to the Sunnis.
