A speech from Dwight Davis Eisenhower:
This order was issued by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage Allied soldiers taking part in the D-day invasion of June 6, 1944. Almost immediately after France fell to the Nazis in 1940, the Allies planned a cross-Channel assault on the German occupying forces, ultimately code-named Operation Overlord. By May 1944, 2,876,000 Allied troops were amassed in southern England. The largest armada in history, made up of more than 4,000 American, British, and Canadian ships, lay in wait, and more that 1,200 planes stood ready. Against a tense backdrop of uncertain weather forecasts, disagreements in strategy, and related timing dilemmas, Eisenhower decided before dawn on June 5 to proceed with Overlord. Later that same afternoon, he scribbled a note intended for release, accepting responsibility for the decision to launch the invasion and full blame should the effort to create a beachhead on the Normandy coast fail. Much more polished is his printed Order of the Day for June 6, 1944, which Eisenhower began drafting in February. The order was distributed to the 175,000-member expeditionary force on the eve of the invasion.

a D-day speech made famous by Dwight D. Eisenhower:
Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force:

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.

The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.

In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations1 have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory.

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

I don't know, I kind of have an issue with this.

Having never experienced war myself I obviously don't know but were these guys any braver than any of our other soldiers?

Why do we heap so much attention on this and not the soldiers in Vietnam who also sometimes face huge odds?

The D-Day guys knew where the enemy was and where to shoot but what about our brave soldiers in Iraq who didn't have a clue where an attack may be coming from?

My God, what about the civil war where thousands died by the minute in some places.

I'm sure any of the men here who've been in combat have their own horror stories to tell.....do you sometimes regret the hype put on the beach stormers here as if they've forgotten about what you sacrificed?

D-Day was a combined effort of allied forces fought in a legitimate war. As a matter of fact, it was our last 'real' war. The others, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan - those are not legitimate wars and that's why men returning today with PTSD and missing limbs require much more emotional support than any man returning from WW2. Men and women answer the call for their country when there's a clear, distinct and legitimate reason to risk their lives.

I lost many of the boys in my high school graduating class because of the useless conflict in Vietnam. They all gave their lives, for what? What was the purpose, to stem the spread of Communism? What a joke that was.

I never cease to be amazed by the level of stupidity even the most basic discussion of history on this forum seems to flush out. What a depressing reflection on the state of the world. My grandfather's generation (he fought the Japanese) would have hoped for so much more.

No, just a couple of the contributions. There is another thread on this topic that is even worse. Truly depressing.
