Berlin denies american veterans "Raisin Bombers" to throw candy and to land at Berlin Airport

    70 years ago after WW II, the Russians blocked Berlin and the allies started the "Airbridge". In thousands of flights they brought food, coal and other stuff into Berlin and that way helped to let the russians end the blockade. Several aircrafts crashed and by the Berliners they were called "Rosinenbomber" because they also dropped sweets for german kids.

    This year was the 70th anniversary and 20 oldtimer DC-3 came from USA to Germany. They planned to fly over Berlin and throw down candy. The oldest attending Pilot was Gail Halvorsen, who is 98 years old. The 20 aircrafts had to fly 30h and do 3 landings to reach Germany.

    They planned a flight over Brandenburger Tor and then throw candy down and lamd at Tempelhof.

    This was banned by Authorities. They allowed only a short overflight over Tempelhof. The aircrafts were then redirected to regional airports like Erfurt, where they got refueled and headed back to USA. Some of the pilots were visible angry and said they will never come again.

    Giving their age, thats highly likely anywaye...

    I think what they dont understand is, that getting candy thrown on you from above is a humilating thing. It feels degrading and i certainly would not like the feeling to get candy thrown on me.

    I understamd why this event got blocked and hope the american organizers understand as well.

    Were the kids getting candy thrown down from planes humiliated back in '49?

    Maybe you and your brethren ilk are just humiliated that your country got their ass totally kicked by countries that are superior to yours then and still are and you're tired of us rubbing your nose in it...again.

    With an attitude like this, you should not wonder why it was banned.

    This event saw Berlin and its citizens as statists in an american propaganda event.

    I would not like to get candy thrown at me.

    When they headed to Erfurt they did fly over my city. I was mit my girl at the pool and they did fly over Weimar. I would not want candy thrown on us.

    The humiliation should be from being a bunch of racist asshats that slaughtered millions of innocent civilians, not whining about people kind enough to consider the children of their enemies. If America knew you folks would become such whiny babies we probably never would have bothered with D-Day...

    It is, many people think like that, you walk on the street, mind yoir business and get then candy thrown on you. Its like throwing bread to chicken.

    Now those old pilots complain and insult Germany. They said they spemd several hundred thousand Doller to make this happen and then when they arrived got blocked.

    Guess when you are 98 your mind gets clouded and you dont see why throwing stuff on people could be seen as insult.

    I bet you're a lot of fun at parades, too :p (Psst, here in America we tend to throw candy at parades also. The kids seem to love it, and the adults tend to not whine like kids about it, go figure. But that's here in America, so your mileage may vary.)

    it'd prolly hurt like hell being barraged with candies from an aircraft, height & speed prolly break windows and damage vehicles, and what for? just some old 'feels good' to remember bs... they should have called for permission long before they ever took off... stupid is what stupid does... pure arrogance

    So you would have preferred we not have flown those flights back then bringing in all the vital necessities AT NO COST TO YOU and to certainly not have dropped candy to the kids, it wasn't "thrown" at them. Why don't you just build the wall back and invite Putin back in?

    This candy dropping was going on in previous Airlift Festivals. I don't know why they stopped it for this one but I suspect the people of Berlin are shifting from gratitude to resentment as the older generation dies out. Maybe Berlin should just stop having the Festival.

    I wish I could go back in time and roast marshmallows in the fires of Hamburg right after the wrath of a few nights and days of constant bombing that leveled that city flat.
