In Australia the term ‘Liberal’ applies to the right wing Conservative party. I’m neither Liberal in the US sense or conservative believing all rigid ideologies are incapable of getting us out of the mess our species has engineered. In fact I find the American obsession with left/right absurd.

 

I went to the Dusseldorf carnival a few times when I was a kid. During the parade of floats candy was thrown to the children. I did not feel humiliated and I left with several kilos of sweets and plastic toys.
The fireworks displays at the end were the best I've ever seen.
This was less than 30 years after Germany had lost the war.

I can see that it would be humiliating to be reminded how much was owed to the allies by the people of Berlin but to snub the aircrews which saved their lives and liberty comes across as ungrateful.
