I was in Dresden, Leipzig, Eisenach and so on in the 90s, drove around the country, all the way to Goerlitz for our Company, back and forth and back and forth. I worked in Central America for many years, it was even worth than Central America.
Dresden was a shithole, dirty, filthy run down, ruins, the roads worse than in Guatemala City.
It is a jewel today, same for Dresden. But it is a jewel because West Germany rebuilt, what East Germany had allowed to become a slum.
Its always interesting how people forget, or want to forget, in what horrible condition the DDR was.
Dresden and Leipzig had no working sewer plant, they were broken down for years. I know because our company wanted to bit on the fixes, same for every other city, town, village I went to. Pre-war crap, same for the main lines. The Southern Engineering fixes were amazing, but they had come to the point were even those could not do the job, over a decade before the collapse.
Raw sewage, house hold and industrial went straight into the rivers or leached happily into the ground.
In one part of Dresden, a main had collapsed, had not been fixed for years, the sewage had saturated the ground so much it was bubbling up, between the Plattenbauten. There were wooden planks for the people to walk over it.
The stench, just sweet.
We took a job in Bombay, which is very bad, indeed.
A employee of ours was cheking holding ponds, chemical industry. They were so bad, no liners, none at all, heavy metals, extremely poisons chemicals, just seeping into the ground. We did checks at the factories of the car manufactories/motorcycles. Pulled some ground probes, unbelievable, that ground had to be removed, it was saturated with toxic materials.
So please don't tell me I have no idea what I talk about.

Est Germany took it for granted, that they got retirement and social security and unemployment, the whole 9 yards, even without having payed into it. I payed for it, my brothers, my father my mother and they were bitching, not enough. The crap money, worthless got a even exchange and they were bitching. They had huge savings, because they could not spend their money in the Arbeiter and Bauern Paradise.
Suddenly they had a lot of money, their savings in DM and they blew it, in no time, like children. 1 year and they were broke and blamed the West.

You wanna pretend to be an expert for infrastructure and that you worked for years in this sector and are referring to an evidence, that the sewer pipes were pre-war in Dresden in the early 90ies? Lol! You obviously have no idea what you are talkiong about. No one denies that the GDR was a shitholestate, but what you wanna give us as evidence just shows that you have no idea about the durability of sewer-pipes.

2. The main part of the restoration of Dresden was took by private investors. Of course the trust in the project was backed up by West-german tax payers with the determination to rebuild East-Germany (so not *******s like those in this thread). So, to put it into one line, socialists, command-economy-freaks and etatists were running the GDR into the ground and made them a shithole state, people with the ideals of a free market rebuild it.

The some ideologists who ruined the GDR are now in command of Germany, command-economy-freaks dreaming of socialism.

3. I know exactly how the GDR looked like (I am from West-Berlin), rotten buildings, rotten infrastructure, ugly architecture, non-competitive industry in one word a socialist state. This is exactly to what the plans of Kevin Kühnert or the Berlin Senate will lead to again, if they are put in action. Pardon, I forgot islamization as a bonus, but was referring to economy in this discussion only. People like you will never understand that nothing in this life is for free, you will freeze the renting (which is by inflation the shrinking of the rent, in the long run a dispossession), housing cooperatives won't generate the capital for new buildings, restorations, investments into buidings etc.

If we follow Kevin Kühnert, the always cash-strapped state will be the only actor in this market and you can give the buildings 35 years and Germany will look like the GDR.

4. This thread is about such a protagonist of a corrupt and incompetent political "elite" who catched a bullet. As it seems right now fired by a West-German right-wing extremist, so here is no excuse for your obsession to insult East-German people. The restoration of the old rotten GDR-cities is a huge success from my point of view.

 

There is some truth in it, many East-Germans did not understand that every proposition, commercials made to them were really adressed to them or people with their finanical opportunities. They were not used to it.
The one-to-one exchange was a poison for the East-German economy, though.
