Some of America's richest people are urging US presidential candidates to back a wealth tax on the super-rich to improve inequality and climate change.

"America has a moral, ethical and economic responsibility to tax our wealth more," they said in a letter.

Signatories include investor George Soros, Facebook's co-founder Chris Hughes, and Molly Munger, daughter of billionaire Charlie Munger.

The group said they were non-partisan and not endorsing any candidate.

    ... https://www.bbc.com/news/business-48752927

Kind of sad that it's up to the billionaires themselves to call for this, our right wing is so ignorant and indoctrinated by Faux News and the less honest wealthy members of our society. You'll notice that every alt-righty's favorite public enemy, George Soros, is among the signatories.

George et al believe in the "end days" scenario where the public rise up and revolt against their little kingdoms... Somewhere there is cake that is still being eaten...

George Soros is non-partisan? Did hell freeze over and CNN hide the news?

It's always easiest to spend somebody else's money. Soros is not a builder- he only harvests money from others, mostly through currency manipulations. Charlie Munger would probably take his granddaughter aside and explain the facts of financial life to her. And facebook? When someone comes into money by way of a lucky hit, a lottery win or some fashion that didn't require them to build it with years of hard work- they rarely realize the value or the difficulty of the average person producing income. Easy come, easy go. That's why around 70% of lottery winners are bankrupt in 5 years. No financial savvy.

The top 10% of taxpayers already pay 70% of the total taxes. How much more do they need to pay before the whiners who coast through life feeling sorry for themselves are happy? 100%? Maybe 110%, so the whiners can actually be paid a bonus for existing?

It's like the marathon leader asking the umpire to add a 1 second per hundred meters penalty to "all" runners once they hit the last two kilometers.

Why would he care? He has a 500m lead over everyone else.

Agreed, if you don't force them to pay, they won't pay a dime. Everyone should pay the same rate.

Maybe one of the dumbest stories ever constructed. When one files their tax returns, they have the option to contribute as much money as they wish. If I am not mistaken, your president Donald J. Trump donates his entire salary as opposed to multi-millionaire socialist Bernie Freeshit Sanders who gives a whopping 3% to charity and nothing in extra taxes.

The top earners wouldn't even notice if their taxes increased by a significant percentage, its all just numbers on a page of their prepared financial statements they receive.

The millionaires — many members of Congress are millionaires — and those that believe they will eventually become one do care very much however.

trump properties are making 100 fold off of the presidency vs the salary he is donating. But it gives his base a temporary reprieve from the day to day corruption so I guess it’s money well spent.

Y’all are a cheap lot to buy, cheaper than a congressman.

Billionaires? Sure, now that they own more wealth than they need to survive and made it to the top, they want more taxes. What about the poor millionaires? Some of them haven't made it yet. This is just a PR stunt to keep the masses from revolting.

Those with a conscience recognize the wealth divide problem as such and want to see it corrected. How is it that Fox viewers are so indoctrinated that they, the same people pining now to "make America great again," fail to recognize and acknowledge the problem, but instead blame people even more poor than themselves (immigrants) and the politicians who would help them if only they weren't obstructed by their indoctrinators, the pro-wealthy and personally wealthy Republicans?

No argument. Get elected and the cash pours in.
I seem to remember a pair that declared they were so broke when they left the white house they had to take furniture and china. Just a few short years later they were managing a "foundation" comprised of donations from individuals and heads of state from all over the world worth well over $2 billion. And then there is that "community organizer" who never had a new worth mentioning until he entered the White House and now have $135 million in the bank. https://www.lmtonline.com/technolog...ack-Obama-surprise-Michelle-at-a-12253007.php

BTW, I would like to see the link on your claim Trumps properties worth have multiplied 100 times since he was elected.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you expect someone who wants everybody in his strata to pay more to just do it on his own. 10 super rich doing something out of the ten thousand super rich has no effect on the country.

I think my neighborhood would be better if everyone mowed thier lawn every week. If I just did it the neighbourhood would still be the same. When I vote for money for schools at the town meeting does not mean that I think I should pay for everyone else.

There is no place in the world where the rich don't pay more, substantially more, than the poor accept in Failed states.

    No, it's not dumb.

Even if everyone in my neighborhood didn't mow their lawn, I'd still mow mine.

Wealth divide is never a problem.

The only problem is if you have people who don't have the basic necessities of life.

If you have the basic necessities, shut up and work harder if you want more.

Always amazes me the number of people crying about how they're poor, but they don't want to work and always have the newest iphone.

The problem in America is that people who do nothing and know nothing believe they deserve as much as those who work tirelessly to advance their material wealth.

I didn’t say they have multiplied 100 times of their previous value, I said they have made more than 100 times what he is “donating” (and then writing off on his taxes), that’s $40MM per year if you are having a hard time with the math.

You don't mow your yard? and are unwilling to do so, even though you want it to be mowed, simply because your neighbors don't? That's illogical

Trump lost money since taking office....unlike Nancy P, Reid, Obama, and Chucky.....he takes public service seriously, and isn't in it to get rich off his office.
