By giving people a choice, we're making the job less attractive? Again, quite the interesting hypothesis.

You aren't alone. I wouldn't have armed myself because of the reaction of colleagues and students.

Armed teachers in almost all cases would carry concealed. Surely that did not need to be pointed out?

Not if you follow proper protocol.

How about we work for a country where arms aren't necessary again? That, to me, seems a more lofty & desirable goal than trying to create a country where every citizen carries a gun & is responsible for his/her own safety.

"To dream the impossible dream." Violence has always been part of the human condition. Our closest relatives in the wild kill each other. If anything, it's pretty peaceful now compared to say 30 or 100 years ago. Guns in the hands of good people (including cops) make things more peaceful.

I repeat myself. . .schools are NOT a good place for armaments. If they become necessary, they should be kept in the hands of the professional law enforcement people, NOT teachers.

Just because something has been done for generations, doesn't imply it should be continued into the next. We have the power to make change. I'd rather dream the impossible dream than cave in to inevitable violence. How do we know anything is impossible if we don't try?

If it cannot actually be achieved within the time frame of six months at the most, then it is not a viable proposal even worth discussing.

What is being proposed on the part of yourself is a world completely devoid of either violence or crime. Such a world cannot exist so long as humans specifically, and life in general, actually exist. Life is nothing but constant violence in one form or another, and there is no way to stop it. Devote a continuous century of effort to achieving such, and you will still be no closer than you were when you first started.

The very same supposed "professional law enforcement people" who are blamed for disproportionately murdering black individuals? The very same supposed "professional law enforcement people" who discharge eighty five rounds at a suspect and manage only one non-vital hit?

I'm just glad my English teacher wasn't armed **** me she was a bitch.

Told me off for reading Dune when I was 12 because she said it encouraged male dominance of women and it should be banned and burnt.

    Nice lady other than that.

Human nature. We are violent. We do a pretty good job of concealing it, but honestly, if you think it can be stopped totally, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. It's a nice idea, and I get that, but people have an inherent violent streak. Guns allow this to be harnessed, so that the weak have a chance against the physically strong. Just go sing "Kumbaya" enough, and maybe you can change the world......

I agree that violence has been a part of history & human nature for a very long time, but the unspoken truth is that we have the power to choose a different path. Peace is always better than conflict. Cooperation always has far better results than competition. We've been brainwashed to believe the opposite. But al we need is to see & accept the truth, & abide by that truth. It's not hard. Just overcoming the brainwashing is hard. In 2018, over 70 million humans became migrants from their former homes to some new country in search of peace, safety & a better life. That migration was caused by violence at home. It's the largest number of migrants in a single year, ever. The violence that caused it needs to be stopped. It serves no one, but disrupts millions of individual lives. Yes, humans are violent. But humans have the ability & the power to choose for themselves. We need to help them make better choices. We need to help them see the power & promise of peace.

Just a coincidence that we are up there in gun deaths in the world and probably number one in industrialized countries. All those statistics are false information LOL

The real world for my students should not be fear of guns. I guess all those students from the United States there that are in Harvard and Yale and Princeton in the top universities than Medical and law schools are all failures of the public schools Why don’t we just do away with public schools and pay tens of thousands for private schools after all it won’t be socialistic

I was a teacher for more than three decades and I am 100% certain by far most teachers, and especially most female teachers, are against teachers carrying.
It's this sort bullsh't generalization that drives good teachers out of the profession. We know there are duds in the classroom, but you (the public) hired them and you're the ones who don't fire them. You elect toads to school boards who hire the damn gym coach as the principal. You're the ones who build football stadiums instead of computer classrooms. If I didn't have enough money that I didn't need the crappy teacher salary, I would never have taught school. A lot of teachers are telling students to go to college when they can't afford to send their own kids.
There are 120,000 K-12 schools in America and this is how many shootings we had this year so far...

You (the public) might try raising teacher salaries and firing the turkeys instead of wasting money on turning schools into armed camps.

PS. You could tell Junior and Sis to keep their cell phones at home and come to school prepared to work.

I also taught for three decades in the toughest areas of Brooklyn New York. I have a best-selling book for the past 20 years and it has brought me Keynoting to teachers throughout the country.I am now hired mostly in June to try and get teachers to stay because the best are leaving

Public schools offer education & hope to anyone willing to make an effort. Private schools help only those who can financially afford them. Such a perspective makes "socialist" much more appealing.

    That's nice.
Nothing changes the fact that you'd see your kids killed in front of you before you'd carry a gun to protect them.
