Florida Approves Bill Allowing Classroom Teachers To Be Armed

Actually, you cannot buy any legal gun in the U.S. at 18. An 18 year old can only buy a rifle or a shotgun. In some states, they can be given a handgun by their parents at 18. You have to be 21 in the U.S. to buy a handgun legally. Please look up the actual laws before making claims. I find most anti-gun folks think there are many less restrictions on guns than really exist.

 

A teacher making an "Amok run" will do so with or without the legal permission to have a gun on campus. I taught for 8 years in the 1990s. I brought in a briefcase to work. I could easily have filled it with handguns or a take-down rifle, and gone amok had I wanted to, despite the fact that at the time it was against the law to have a gun within 1000 feet of a school campus. Legally armed teachers could easily stop an "Amok run" by one of their colleagues.

 

A security guard is expected to provide security for those they are employed by. They are expected and employed to be mobile. An educator, however, is expected to hold their position in their classroom. Should the mass shooter happen to pick the classroom where an armed educator is present, it will be a costly decision on their part.

 

Would said underpaid educators defend their own lives with a firearm?

No one has charged, or seeks to charge, a teacher to shoot back.

 

They only way they can arguer against it is to mal-characterize the specifics.

 

This is an actual conversation down here in Broward. What would happen to a teacher who freezes in terror and fails to act? It can happen to anyone who has no experience in firefights, and vast majority of teachers don't. Will they be labeled "the coward of Broward" in the media and then thrown to jail? I KNOW you don't have the answer, since no one does, but it is the question the teachers are thinking about.

 

All well and good - no one has ever said teacher MUST carry guns.

 

And many WILL NOT, after seeing how the armed guard was treated.

The other issue is the inner city schools where an armed teacher cam be attacked and disarmed by a gang-banger student, so the shooters dont actually bring a gun to school when they can just grab it from the teacher.

Why do people keep calling the guy in Parkland an "armed guard?" He was a School Resource officer, which means he was a Sheriff's deputy. He was a certified and sworn police officer, not simply an armed guard.

Would you ask a Doctor Who is not carrying a gun if he would prefer to see his patients killed because he didn’t have a gun? No I am a teacher I am not a cop. Perhaps we should have more cops in schools or perhaps we should just have fewer guns available but men and their “Weapons”There’s something very sad about the need for teachers to be armed. That is not a prerequisite

How dare anyone expect me to have a gun on me. Obviously you don’t understand what a teacher is and can’t differentiate between the teacher and a cop. You’re the one fighting for more guns so it is you who prefers to see children killed in front of you because guns are more important than children

Defend themselves with deadly force against their own student? I think this idea exposes yet another problem.

One keep wondering how many innocent black children in their schools will be gun down by nerve teachers given the yearly death total of innocent blacks being killed by error by cops.
