I went hard keto over seven years ago. To be blunt, it saved my life. I was transformed into a healthier person than I've ever been. I lost over 60 pounds and added a LOT of muscle. Joint pain all but disappeared. My lifelong chronic heartburn problem was cured almost overnight. My extremely difficult and unusual brand of blood sugar problems, which were literally killing me, came under control for the first time in my life. And my blood pressure dropped like a rock to normal or lower. I got fit, trim, and looked ten years younger.

When I started, a lot of people told me I was nuts. It was thought to be dangerous by many in the medical field. And the diet can be dangerous if you don't do your homework and stick to the plan like clockwork. The biggest problem is dehydration. When you metabolize fatty acids, a great deal of water is used in the process. So burning fat literally sucks the water right out of you. It is super critical to get enough water. If you don't, you can go into kidney failure or do lasting damage. And you can't go without ANY carbs. You need a minimum of 25 grams a day for the brain to function, as well as a few other critical functions.

But I was dying and desperate. So when I heard about keto, I reasoned that it may help control my blood sugar problems. So I did my homework, learned a lot about ketosis and how we metabolize foods, and then followed the requirements absolutely. And the results were life-changing - beyond my wildest dreams. And in my 50s, I've been dating young hotties in their 20s and 30s, ever since. :)

I haven't eaten bread, pasta or any wheat products, potatoes, beans, processed foods, sugar, or any other high-carb food, for over seven years now. [with just a few exceptions on special occasions, and then only in very limited amounts. ].

I think the military is going to have even worse time meeting enlistment quota if folks have to give up beer and pizza...

If they aren't willing to give up beer and pizza, then they had better stop and reconsider whether they are willing to die for their country.

That's not a bad thing. I don't like the military being sold as an alternative lifestyle. It is about death and destruction, not career opportunities. It is a necessary evil. If a kid wants to serve for the right reasons, fine. But it should be out of a sense of duty or service, and with full knowledge that this is a possible a life and death decision. It isn't a place to go to improve your life.

Two weeks ago I saw my cardiologist and he said my triglycerides were through the roof, insanely high, but they were normal two years ago. He then told me to cut back on my carb intake and that was painful. I eat lots of bread, tortilla chips, fries, spuds, pizza, rice and Bud Light. Since then I haven't eaten any pizza, fries, tortilla chips or spuds. I still eat a little bit of rice and my Bud Lights aren't going anywhere but the problem with me is that when it comes to beer I have a hollow leg. He recommended that I switch to Corona Premier - I tried it, it's ultra smooth, but it goes down so easy that I drank a 12 pack in about 2 hours and it went down like it was iced tea. It had zero effect on me and left me wanting more. So my choice is now 4 or 5 Buds or a 12+ pack of Corona Premiers. I'm sticking with the Bud for now but cutting back.

Congrats!!! Sound like you made major positive life changes... I'm in the process of doing the same, but not going full Keto yet. Just cutting out ALL bread and rice, 95% of potatoes (a few tiny reds every now and then), and a lo-carb pasta we found on the Net.. Zero alcohol... Drink 4-6 liters of water a day.

My A1C on March 20th was 10.6 (on 2 medicines and Dr was about to put me on third). I convinced him to give me 3 months and he did.

My A1C on June 13th was 5.9, and I'm in the process of weaning off one of the 2 medicines....

Also have cut my weight from 258 to 244.5 (this AM) in 3.5 months.. Took me years to build this mass up, likely gonna take me 2 years to get to my target weight of 215 (I'm a shade under 6'1")

Really hasn't been a huge change, although lo/no carb food is more expensive. Scary when you actually read labels on most food in the supermarket... never really did until March....

Only one hottie for me... married 28 years to a wonderful cook (doesn't help!!)

Congratulations. When you get off the bad foods you really don't miss them that much. I eat similarly and white bread isn't even appetizing to me. Remember your body treats white bread like sugar.

Wonder Bread used to build strong bodies 12 ways. But I don't know if it still does.

Actually, since Trump is the IMBECILE-in-Chief, maybe the Dept. of Defense can recommend that the Disgusting Morbidly Obese Tub of LARD (Trump) try the Keto Diet?

I figured this was coming, the science is showing this is the way to go

not only is it healthier, but easier to carry food, easier to go without food when needed, can hold your breath longer and reduces seizures on long dives, improves endurance, and speeds healing time

has many benefits to the brain too

He is the so called leader of the military and should live by example for the troops.

Give up beer for harder stuff and cut out the junk foods. Sounds like a good idea. I mean, the occasional beer is no problem, but drinking beer all weekend, every weekend is bad.

That said, this aint gonna happen on a wide scale. The special ops guys can do this because they are a smaller unit, but the rest of the military is huge. Not gonna happen.

Although, small group leaders can push this diet on soldiers who are not meeting the physical standards.

if they go 90/10 keto it wont work anyway since those trained people need protein
i dont see vegetation working on it either since they get alot of calories from carb eitherways

keto diet or a low carb diet on higher proteine % isnt to hard to organize though

The only diet is 'do more exercise or eat less calories'. Period. That's it. A keto diet can fit that by reducing calories, but barring conditions like celiac disease you would do just as well eating the same number of calories from loaves of bread.

This just isn't going to work, at least going full Keto. Too many troops are off base getting BAH and are not eating in dining facilities. However it might be a great idea to use in Basic Training when the military has total control and can decide their diet. This could also be used on deployments where, once again, you are eating mostly in dining facilities. The military needs to come up with some low carb dining options in their dining facilities and develop some low/no carb MRE options.
