Tile roofing has to be delivered and stacked on the roof weeks ahead of time on new construction. The weight of the tile compresses the framing and settles the building and takes some time. Otherwise all of the drywall joints will crack and screws will pop the topping. Comp shingles loaded ahead of time is just logistics.

Huh. I was picturing more of an exposed aggregate, like beach pebbles. Is the concrete actually gray, or did they tint it to blend with the house?

Hey lady! Good to know you are still wandering these great halls. You left your lasagna dish last time, it's back in the kitchen. I was hoping for a refill!

I wanted more pebbles to show, but this is nice enough. It does match the sidewalks pretty well.

They didn't tint it. I expect it to cure greyish.

I don't blame you for jobbing that out. I was on the bottom end of the totem pole so it was real physical work. I can understand how some people would develop back problems over the years.

Some of the younger guys on the masonry crew who built our fireplace could probably attest to that, too. Knocking out concrete block walls and lugging around bricks and mortar all day isn't exactly light work. To make matters worse my pyromaniacal wife wanted a castle-sized fireplace we could build bonfires in (the opening of the firebox is about 4' by 4') so it was a fairly big job. I had never seen a fireplace built before, so I developed a great appreciation for what a highly skilled mason can do.

Nice work, Seth, and my wife would love your hydrangeas. She's got a wide variety of them but all the blooms are white.

What women don't understand even when explained is that not all
houses can have a working fireplace.Maybe a little wood burning stove
in the Kitchen. But not a Large Fireplace with a sturdy mantleshelf in a
main room { Living room }. There has to be enough height for chimney
to garner a draft.Plus a flue has to be small enough. Not Big enough.
10 to 1 ratio as to width of the fireplace opening to the flue.

Then there's the whole thing about ambience vs. efficiency. You can't beat the ambience of a wood burning fireplace but as you know a wood stove is far more efficient in terms of heating and fuel efficiency. I remedied that problem to some degree by having a Rumford fireplace built

    RUMFORD2.jpg

For those unfamiliar with a Rumford:
Obviously, it's still not as efficient as a wood stove but it's far superior to a deeper fireplace with walls that aren't angled to throw heat out into the room instead of straight up the flue. I wanted this to serve as a complimentary and backup source of heat in the winter so the Rumford design was the best option. My hat goes off to Sir Benjamin Thompson, even though he was a damned Loyalist - his fireplace works like a champ.

I'd like to have a little wood stove, but I don't have a place to put one.

    Oh wait...

20190815_141438.jpg After trying some stained glass I got to looking at different glass objects at the thrift stores. I ran out of room so I decided to build a cabinet for them. The glass is auto glass and the frame is old t&g wall board. The cabinet will be made from old wood siding. Got to do something with the stuff sitting outside before it rots. So I'll just try to improve my feeble woodworking skills. At least till I use the stuff exposed to the elements. When it gets cooler I am going to build a small deck with a steel roof.....all reclaimed materials.

20190815_141433.jpg The finish is linseed oil over bare wood. Can't see any reason to stain it. As soon as I get one of those clamping workbenches I will clamp my door planer in it and make a joined... Cool trick I saw.

    Madonna mia!

I had no clue we were suppose to threaten to throw people down the stairs if they called you, Fredo or Fredolina.

They didnt clearly write that Italian slur on the chalkboard at the Italian Club. The chalkboard is hung around the neck of the Columbus statue we got when someplace wanted it removed. Beautiful statue. We light it up red, white and green on Friday nights and dance around it while we eat pizza. We call it the Pizza Dance. Not like the Diva Dance but close.

No trips planned, I am ready to go anywhere that is cool. We are having some heat waves hot enough to write home about. We are right up there with Texas on the heat scale. My power bill reminds me of how hot it is here.

You got it. I made some brazole yesterday when I was making the gravy. Im getting a lot of tomatoes from the garden and Im making gravy to freeze. I had some flank steak left over from steak sandwich we had the night before so a little pepperoni, grating cheese, breadcrumbs and parsley rolled up, fried and put in the gravy.
Come, sit down. You eat. You dont eat, you get skinny. You get skinny a wind can come and knock you down. You get knocked down you could break a rib. You break a rib all because you no sit down and eat.

I wonder if Fred or Freddie is also an English version of an insult. Hey, you learn something every day.

    Funny you ask that.

Any time I catch my wife watching some tedious English melodrama on TV like Downton Abbey I yell "HEATHCLIFF!!".
