Yes, from Jane Austen, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, to Shakespear and the list goes on, my favorite was the Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens , "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." a very good description of where we are now. Maybe the authors of days gone by were the seers of the present day.
Speaking of short story writers the best was O'Henry.

A Tale of Two Cities is one of my favorite novels, too. I'd have to say Shakespeare is my favorite writer of all time and Tennessee Williams gets my vote for second place as playwright. Mark Twain and Poe are probably my favorite short story writers. When I was in school we also read The Bear, which was my introduction to Nobel laureate William Faulkner. Decades later I finally got around to reading one of his novels, Absolom, Absolom! that my wife has in her own personal collection and I was blown away. I'd have to say it might be the greatest American tragedy ever written - certainly the greatest I have ever read. I also consider his short Nobel Banquet speech one of the finest orations of all time:

    Simply magnificent.

All necessary reading for the ability to be well read.
Romance novels aren't serious reading. Some, but not most.
I am no fan of Shakespeare. He's virtually all over the place.
At least with Faulkner, one has grounding.Maybe too much.
    With Tennessee Williams one always has Sexual innuendo { usually sweaty }
and conflict exuding from the human reaction to competition for
    sexual appeal or appetites.
With Poe one has a high dose of almost psychedelic spooks.
He was among the scariest of all writers.Psychologically speaking.
But you fail to cite other writers like Jack London and the great
Russian writers.Or the popular down to earth writing of Hemingway.
One thing is certain concerning Great Writers and their content.
It needs to be read ... and Talked about.
Unlike today's environment where Politics is literally front & center.
    TOO Mush so.

Pickup line ? You mean like the ones Mickey Rourke used to
    snag a fellow boozer Faye Dunaway in - Barfly - { 1987 }.
    How about :
    Wanda { Dunaway } " I can't stand people,I hate them "
    Henry { Rourke } " Oh yeah "
Wanda " Do you hate them ? "
Henry " No, but I seem to feel better when they're not around . "

My thoughts entirely.Frankly speaking My dear.

Many people are unaware of this - Easy Rider - { 1969 } fact.
It was The first movie to have/offer a Complete Soundtrack of the
songs. My High school buddy who had a used VW and worked on it
constantly { Really wide rear tires with flared fenders } and maintained
the front tires need to be stock to ensure proper steering was also a
Electrician. His dad owned an electronics distributorship and had a
TV/Radio shop in their basement. My Buddy also had a Ham Radio license.
This was a time when 8-track cassettes and players were in vogue.
So of course he put one in his VW.A lot of Kids did.
He had an Easy Rider cassette that we played the crap out of.
It was like being in heaven.Racing around in his VW { My buddy kinda
got off on acting crazy when driving } and listening to that Easy Rider
    soundtrack.

Just saw an Ad for Bondic... a new super glue. That is 50 times stronger
than glue and also easy to handle. It requites a handheld laser pointer
to bond the stuff when applied.Meaning no hurry.Take yer time.
Like finishing off an entire watermelon on a hot summer day.

Good morning, barflies. Sad news this morning for those who knew him... my old forum buddy, Frogger, died of a sudden heart attack yesterday. He gave up forums for FB sometime ago, but continued to be an active voice for conservative America. Frogger was a retired teacher (6th grade) and many of his students still followed him on social media. RIP my friend. You will be missed. :(

That is a sad thing to read this morning. Frogger always had sensible comments. I missed him when he left the forum and now he really will be missed.

My favorite BIL passed away Monday from cancer. He lived such an unpretentious and kind life when I read his obituary only then did I realize all of his accomplishments in life. He was extremely modest about his talents. He was special.

Yes,a Good guy.A real trooper for sanity and old-fashioned good cheer.
However He's been gone awhile.I wonder why.
Why did he leave the Forums.?
Why did Mikezilla.? Is there a lesson to be learned.
I don't cotton coincidence or happenstance.
Unless and until Publishers Clearing House arrives at my front
    door with one them Checks.

I'm starting to dig in front of the wall.

    20190817_172453.jpg

This isn't how it will end up. It's way too much dirt. I'll remove a good bit of it and mix in some compost.

I keep changing my mind about what to plant there. My first, absolutely positive choice was grass. Then, I absolutely positively decided on Tuscan Sun.

Now, I'm absolutely positively decided on Emerald Carpet.
