Yeah, she's not my first choice. But here's the thing: STILL better than Trump in that regard, and in every other. That's how far Trump has lowered the bar.

The "green new deal" is an ASPIRATIONAL goal, not an actual plan. It simply says we should try to become #1 in green energy, and lays out a whole bunch of ways we might achieve that.

Expect bits of it to pass, not the whole thing.

#1, Every other first-world country on the planet does the same thing, and gets good overall results. It's really not impossible, nor will it bankrupt us; it will mostly just shift the way we pay for health care.

#2, it will only pass if there is large public support for it. So I wouldn't worry about it.

What does that have to do with anything? Generational jealousy isn't a reason to NOT improve things. Make a different argument if you're going to oppose this.

High levels of student debt is a large, real problem. We need an educated populace in order to compete globally, so we need higher education to be affordable. You either do this or some sort of free college. Conservatives oppose both. If you have a different plan, I'd love to hear it. "Do nothing" isn't an option.

    See?

Again, most of the rest of the developed world already does something like this. We were traveling in Europe this year, and tried explaining our higher-education system to some people from Spain and Croatia. In Europe, if you have to pay to go to college, it's a little suspicious. It means you weren't good enough to get into one of the public universities. That strikes me as logical: do well on the entrance tests, get into college without paying. If you don't do well and still want to go to college, pay your way.

We already do free K-12 education. Adding on 2-4 years of college just isn't a big lift.

I have no problem with excluding illegal aliens from the "free" bit, but that's really a small, separate issue. Illegal college-aged kids aren't a large enough group to make a big difference in the bottom-line cost.

Again, I would expect to see illegals excluded. Meanwhile, blue-collar and middle-class people would be among the biggest beneficiaries of such a program. It would make college much more affordable for them.

What other countries give free college and health care to illegals? I can’t go to Canada
And get free medical and my grandmother was born in Canada.

Maybe we can ship some of the people at the border to a country that wants him.

    I appreciate the honest reply...

I forgot to include this but let’s talk reparations which I see only 27% of voters approve of.

Here is my question on reparations...,
Say they agree to give every slave descendent $100k - arbitrary amount.

Where does it end? Are we paying every slave descendent until the end of time?

You know it will be changed from slave descendents to any black persons. Jamaica, Haitians... mixed races....

I can just imagine how the Don throws a fit when Melania tells him that it's absurd when he wants sex. What a poor, poor boy...

UK, for instance. My wife broke her ankle when we were young and backpacking in Northern Ireland. They patched her up, gave her meds and a crutch, all at no cost.

But again, I think your focus on illegals is a mistake. If that is the make-or-break point, they simply won’t be covered. But in the scheme of things, they’re not a significant additional cost. Let’s weigh the pros/cons of the program, not get hung up on a relatively minor side point.

You know each of these topics could be it’s own thread, right? :)

Again, not going to actually happen without broad support.

Reparations is one of those things that is a good principle, but the devil will be in the details. It can’t be ongoing, and dropping a wad of cash on people unprepared to deal with it is just a recipe for waste — the way many lottery winners end up broke.

It’d be interesting to look at the total cost of a proposed reparations program, and then say “what if we instead spent that money on better schools, urban redevelopment, college scholarships, etc. — things that actually address the root of inequality?”

I guess the thing I would reiterate is that campaign promises are aspirational. All they do is tell you the direction a candidate would like to go. Not every promise is fulfilled, and even when they are, the reality is often far different than what the candidate was touting,

I trust the legislative system to strip out most things that are politically unpopular or simply too expensive or unworkable.

Thank you again & not that it matters, but it is nice to chat with you & I “respect” your opinion.
I do agree that this probably should have been in another thread, I hate these mods, so let them fret about it.

I hear you on presidential campaign promises.
One of the best things I heard from Obama
During his first campaign was the idea that after you max out your fica contribution at 132k you wouldn’t pay zero fica until you get to 250k
Where fica would kick in again.

That would have been a great idea, but we never heard about it again after he got elected.

Trump is mad enough to tweet about it. Don't pretend you don't think it's a "big deal" to his supporter looking at the way they are whining about it.

denuclearing NK?? You are dreaming. Not only didn't Trump do that, now he is enabling Iran to arm itself with nukes. Trump is a cluster F. Nobody is laughing at the US, but they sure as hell are laughing at Trump.

That sounds like what a schoolyard bully would say. Best hand over your lunch before I beat you to a pulp mentality. Except the rest of the students would band together and teach that schoolyard bully a lesson he won't forget.

How has she insulted the US? By declining Trump's offer? Is it really an insult for a country to decline an offer from the US?

Tip for you. The rest of the world can trade with each other, and America can't exists on her own. The proof can been seen clearly that Trump had to subsidized 10+ billions to farmers due to the trade wars. You and your ilk aren't going to bully anybody, not NK, not Iran, not Greenland.

Jeezie creezie. When I heard he had batted around the idea of buying Greenland, sure, a little bonkers, but fine. It could have just been chatter. Then it turned out he was kind of serious about it. Okay, that would be facepalm worthy with any other President, but my standards are low for Trump so he can get a pass. But to get butthurt about the rejection? Can we please get some adults in the room? And to pretend that his hurt feelings were someone not about him but an insult to the US? I still can't figure out if he's this dumb or just thinks his followers are. This is getting harder to determine with each passing day.
