Neener Neener, mine starts tonight. 30 days on the wagon, I have a feeling tomorrow morning will involve a mild hangover.

It does take a lot of work and practice and I've been doing a lot of experimenting which hasn't always worked out so well, but I've probably learned more from my mistakes than my successes.

One thing I do like about home brewing is that you can concentrate on making the styles you like and customizing them further. It's going to be interesting to see how things work out with the fresh hops because I've never brewed with them before. Speaking of which, I've even pondered growing my own barley and making everything from scratch but I'm not sure I want to get into malting grains. I can see myself winding up a failed maltster like Samuel Adams. It just seems like too much work.

However, one thing I am contemplating making from scratch is hard cider. We planted a small apple orchard several years ago and once they start cranking out fruit I'm going to make cider out of the apples we don't eat. I might even experiment with making Applejack. Heck, now that I think about it I could probably start experimenting with that this Fall - all I need is a small freezer...

Had an interesting flight. It hadn’t occurred to me that it is back to school time until we boarded the plane and I found myself surrounded by hot college chicks. Well, there was one fat one (seems there always is) but they were chatty, the next thing I knew we were on final approach.

We are currently cleaning out a house bought at foreclosure auction, for a possible flip. This goes beyond roaches, flees and other assorted atrocities. I cannot comprehend how people can live like that.

Unbelievable how some people live. I watch Hoarders because it makes my house look spotless in comparison. And 600 lb Life because it makes me feel skinny.

    All in ones perception. ;)

I like the idea of growing your own hops. It is an accomplishment worthy of praise. I thought about it here in Bama but never carried through. I might be better off growing Kiwi fruit. I am finally getting figs from cuttings made a few years ago.

Have you ever noticed that houses fall apart faster with no inhabitants?

When I was a kid, we found an "abandoned" house just outside of our projecks.

It took us kids about two months to render it unsalvageable.

Well, we did have the thrill of having to remove the previous owners. They left 'everthing'. I'm washing clothes and towels and pots and pans, then donating to Goodwill. Figured someone could make use of some of it.

We had done a walk through when they were still in there during their 30 day grace period. We had commented afterward that at least the floor (vinyl plank) looked half way decent. Believe it or not they actually took the flooring with them. Who does that?????

It's definitely a challenge to grow them in the South. They don't particularly like our hot and humid summers, they're not drought tolerant, they're highly susceptible to downey and powdery mildew, and the Japanese beetles will devour them if you don't pick them off every day. If you decide to try growing them I would start with the Cascade hops because they're the best hot weather hop and they're pretty disease resistant. However, there's not a lot you can do about the Japanese beetles except stay after them. I hate those bugs.

I get my hop plants from Great Lakes Hops up in Zeeland, Michigan. They sell plants instead of rhizomes and they've got an enormous selection. They even gave me a free one with my first order.

I don't know that we can grow Kiwi fruit in Virginia although I've read about a cultivar that is supposed to be cold-hardy. However, we bought a couple Pomegranates that were supposed to be cold-hardy and one of them got killed during a deep freeze. The other one died back to the ground but it's taken two years to get it back into decent shape and we're still years away from it getting big and tough enough to produce fruit.

As for your figs, did you plant them in the ground? We have a couple Brown Turkey figs in containers that are supposed to be cold-hardy and we're thinking of planting them in a sheltered place somewhere but I'm afraid they'll die like that one Pomegranate.

I planted the figs in the ground and every year the frost knocks them back but they get a little bigger every year. We took the cuttings from a plant growing nearby.... The ground they are growing in is sand and clay.
