I remember years ago that I used to just love half-burnt potato chips. Not burned black but just half brown.

Lately I've noticed that they're just aren't any and I think I know why. I saw a "How's It Made" where they use a laser and compressed air to blow these chips out of the batch, Amazing what they can do, but WHY?

I can't believe that I'm the only person that finds half burned chips that delicious. Is there any company or brand that makes them? i don't mean "kettle" chips or "ugly" chips but just half burned chips.

Burned potatoes are not good for you; carcinogens.

I personally much prefer them evenly cooked and not burned.

The only exception might be if it's grilled.

They use imaging technology and track every single chip with a color error. Then they are cycled back into the product stream, checked a second time, and then ejected if they fail on the second pass.

First time I saw this [about 22 years ago] I was floored. They can take a waterfall of chips moving like a bat out of hell, and blow one specific chip out of the stream. Freaking amazing to watch.

I solved a problem Tim's chips were having. They had a problem getting even distribution of the seasoning. So for something like the jalapeno chips, one would be bland and the next would knock you over. I was proud of myself when I solved the problem Later I read all kinds of complaints on their website. LOL! People liked the irregularity. :D

If you buy low-priced minor brand chips, you should find burnt ones. The reason some name brands are so expensive compared to lesser brands, is often the level and cost of quality control. Places like Frito Lay are insanely tight with their controls. Why? Because a basic principle of manufacturing is to strive for product consistency. Find what sells the best and make every chip exactly the same. More people don't like burnt chips than do.

Put a frying pan on the cooker with the setting on "full blast". Then go down to the corner store to buy a packet of chips. By the time you get back, the pan should be sizzling so open the packet and dump the chips in. Before you know it they'll be burnt on the edges.

I also prefer “well done” chips.
