Just want to argue . They love it . No one seems to to really want to gain understanding . If you say you like one thing about Trump, your a Tumpet, a Deplorable, Racist, Orange Man lover, if you say one thing you dislike about Trump, your a foul, stupid, violent anti-christ leftist.

Why can't a middle ground ever be reached ?

Most people want to be ruled. Our two party system is great because everyone gets their ruler and the added benefit of thinking they get to choose who the ruler is from time to time.

A middle ground may result in more freedom and that scares the dickens out of most people.

We were actually able to reach a middle ground here: Ranked Vote: How Should the Law Handle Abortion?
and here: Ranked Vote: How To Enact Immigration Reform? (Consolidated)

A lot of it really has to do with the sort of framework people are operating in.
For instance, people operating in a highly competitive framework, tend to become more competitive,
while the very same people operating within a more cooperative framework will become more cooperative.
Currently, our overall political framework is implicitly set up to create division, therefore we shouldn't really be surprised when division occurs…

Not surprised I guess. Just wondering what's the point? "We all side whichever way we do, why bother? It seems more for entertainment purposes than anything else. Like a hobby. "I like to argue politics". But there really is no meaningful exchange.

In the age of ultra high partisanship and polarization. Maybe it is. Back in 2006 independents made up 30% of the total electorate, today they're at 42%. Both major parties have shrunk. Perhaps the desertion from both major parties does give us some hope that at sometime we can meet in the middle. Neither party can win an election without gaining at least some independent support. Most independents ideological wise are somewhere in-between our two major parties. I think the party that would move toward the center a bit, becoming center left or center right could entice the independents they lost back into their fold. Thus becoming the dominant party for the next 20-30 years. But that is nothing more than a fanciful dream.

Not everyone is interested in meaningful political exchanges unfortunately.
One typically needs to do quite a bit of work in seeking out those who are,
though, if you're clever, you can use a site like this to attract a few of them
to you instead. Again, it all goes back to the framework we're operating in.
That is... who you attract here depends on how you set up your threads.

    Agree with the above.

Viewed from the conservative side, the problem with middle ground is that the left moves further and further left as time passes - and therefore the middle moves left too.

Even the middle ground involves arguing. Maybe even moreso since you have both extremes to deal with. I do find it interesting that the title is about the political spectrum, but the examples revolve around attitudes toward Trump rather than on any political issue.

Most people aren't logical. We attach our egos to our view point and the world's biggest earth quake can't shake it loose. Logic be damned.

There is no middle ground between individualism and collectivism. They are diametrically opposed. One threatens the very existence of the other. I believe most of our political disagreements can be boiled down to one of these two agendas.

Yes. I agree. It just gets tiresome. Don't even know why I come be here sometimes...

We teach five year olds, "Your body belongs to you." Then they grow up and are told "your body belongs to us if your pregnant". What kind of BS is that?

And then we have all other sorts of contradictory messages... and both sides do it, and pretend they don't.

For the last several years I’ve been structuring my life so that I don’t need anything either side is selling. My only regret is I didn’t start the process as a teenager.

Now I can “channel surf” between Limbaugh and Pod Save America and laugh or learn as appropriate without the need to run for safety to a tribe.

The founders intended the individual to be free literally and cognitively. The cognitive freedom has been surrendered and we are on the verge of surrendering concrete freedoms as a result.

I think we have to recognize that there are people that achieve economic and political benefits from promoting this situation. And they propagandize to achieve an intended result

We already found a middle ground on gun control when we restricted full auto. You want to move the middle ground. Which means it doesnt exist.

there are many of us in the middle-ground. we simply don't squeak enough to get the grease. when obama was in office, the birthers were given the forefront in a sad attempt to make everyone who opposed his anti-american rhetoric look foolish and racist. we didn't disagree with everything he did, but we were lumped in with the most virulent fanatics. now that trump is in office, agreeing with anything he might propose gets us lumped in with the "basket of deplorables" and we are vilified as trump loving fanatics. of course we find some of his actions foolish, but we are sensible and pragmatic enough to realize that even a broken clock is right twice a day and trump is anything but a broken clock.

what you have to look at is who is driving public sentiment. the vast majority of the electorate are lumpen idiots. they have been told over and over again that the government is there to take care of them and they foolishly believe it. who is it that tells them these tales of the fantastic? who is it that tells them that the american government is the ultimate sugar-daddy and that his largess is open to all comers?

That's far from a "middle ground". Not even banning Assault weapons is a middle ground.

The idea behind a middle ground is not just about what guns are legal. It's about how to save the most lives.

But this is why I say that there is a middle ground in real life, though not within this forum. Here, saving lives is irrelevant. But in the real world, most people: left, right, gun owners and gun control advocates; already agree on a series of sensible measures that are easy to implement.

So the middle ground is wherever you think it should be...

I don't think you understand what middle ground means.

Middle ground is what I described above: what people from all sides can agree on.

    You actually didn't know that?

There are many things in which people from all sides right now agree on that are waaaay beyond "banning fully automatic weapons". Which is what you defined as your middle ground.

    Project much?

Theres nothing people from all sides can agree on in this. Theres a large portion that want to ban what another large portion will fight to keep.

Of course there are things not everyone will agree on.
That's why there's a need to find middle grounds...
Spots on the issue-spectrum which lay roughly
in the middle of all other positions.

saving lives is irrelevant. people die, this is a given. the simple fact is that most gun deaths are the result of firearms that are either illegally obtained or used in a manner that is already illegal. creating a class of big black scary firearms and making them illegal isn't going to save a single life. the middle ground is to quit belly-aching about what people do illegally with guns and start paying attention to why they do it. of course, that isn't going to make any headlines. it's far more useful to all those useful idiots to blame the tools than to take a good hard look at the social ills that have caused these calamities to begin with. it's far more lucrative to blame the deep pockets of gun manufacturers and restrict the rights of the average american citizen than to recognize the moral decay that urban blight and an entitlement society have caused.

The day trump was elected the middle ground disappeared. There is no middle ground between being a great nation, and being reduced to the pathetic joke trump and him minions have made of this country.

Opposition to trump and his election isn't political. It is personal. It was a betrayal of everything the country has ever striven to be, It is sick. It is a crime against the nation. It is treasonous in nature. And there is no getting over it. EVER.

Trumpers were warned that we would never accept such a revolting human being. And it was treated as hysteria, trump derangement syndrome, liberal blah blah blah. Well it wasn't. It was good crying out against evil.
