I'd put it this way--we have a number of services performed by the government itself that government should get from business. Paying for these services can be done by (a) government contracting for them (road building, for example), (b) government subsidizing them (Medicare, Medicaid skilled nursing for low-income seniors), or (c) government providing an income (Social Security) and expecting that amount will take care of personal expenses like food, clothing, and shelter.

IMO, we should have as much as possible in category "c" above.

Why get rid of unions? We have every right as individuals to join together and enter the labor market as what amounts to a business selling labor (a union). You sound like some guy who wants to have the government to stop me from going into business..

Why is there a electoral college instead of the popular vote ? There were even low information people back when they wrote the Constitution.

But even the electoral college failed back in 2008.

Since journalism is dead today, few read the newspapers but why would they today because journalism is dead.
To many can't tell the difference from the news and commentary. Americans were better informed thirty years ago than they are today.

Why is when there is a large turnout of young voters and or first time voters, the Democrat wins and really stupid ballot initiatives are passed ?

Are they that low information that they don't know socialism isn't Americana and America is not suppose to be like Europe or Mexico or like Asia.

I was listening to a commentary this morning about "Dreamers," illegal aliens who illegally violated America's sovereignty when they were under the age of 18.
Most low information Americans actually believe that these illegal alien dreamers are still children today.
They are not, the vast majority are over 26 years of age and many are now 38 years of age.

 

It wan't always like that.

I think the internet has dumbed down society and journalist are no longer journalist but political operatives.

 

He caucuses with the Democrats and is running to get the Democrat nomination.

 

Sorry for his health concerns but there is no way he can continue a vigorous campaign and keep his health at this point. He should gracefully bow out and either endorse someone else or leave it to his supporters. If he stays in it is merely to raise more money.

 

Nothing has changed. Pre-internet the ignorant, ill informed, bigoted, stupid and profoundly dishonest had relatively small audiences and couldn't hide their identities. All the internet has done is give such people a platform, removed any immediate social consequence for their behaviour and let them find other similar people. Again, a day on this or any other forum lets you see it in action. There is literally no statement dishonest enough or stupid enough that you can't find people to agree with it. I would have thought you of all people would understand that.

The real problem isn't the internet, it is the promotion of ignorance as something people should be proud of and the attacking of those who are informed as 'elite' or 'out of touch'. It is the attacks on science & other educated disciplines by people who don't want to hear facts that challenge their opinions. Finally, it is the elevation of opinion to the level of fact that is the most corrosive element. People simply demand that their opinion be treated as fact because they believe it. Again, I would think you of all people would understand this.

 

I still don't know why you say 32 and not 30, 35 or 40.

Before 1965 you couldn't be drafted unless you were 21 years of age or older.
That's the way the U.S. Army wanted it and they wanted 21 to 26 year olds not teenagers.

But they changed the law and started drafting 18, 19 and 20 year olds.

I know why, those who were in their 20's, many who had just graduated from college were just beginning to settle down working in careers, getting married and buying houses and one day they find themselves in the Army.
Basically it was disrupting to many adults lives in their 20's.

So they started drafting 18, 19 and 20 year old kids.

They say the Vietnam War was America's first war fought by teenagers.
Actually the average age of an American soldier or Marine in Vietnam was 20.

Look at the age of the first American soldiers and Marines who went into combat in the Southwestern Pacific in 1942 most were in their late 20's and early 30's. These were mature adult males not tennagers.

After my tour of duty in the Marine Corps including 13 months "in-country" in Vietnam, when I was discharged I was a Sergeant and wasn't even old enough to vote or buy a beer.

 

I figured you'd miss the point entirely. Maybe the internet does make some people stupid.
