Oh it most certainly was a failed state.. unemployment, inflation, the collapse of agriculture and their modest oil production plus sectarian strife.

Where have you lived in the Middle East?

I like Lyndsey Grahan but he and McCain never saw a war or an action they werent for.
American Troops need a break from endless deployments that rip their lives apart, and if america did anything else we need to get the rest of the industrialized world off their ass's and start financially contributing MONEY and TROOPS. Germany France and England are very opinionated about world events while they sit on their hands and let everyone else do it for them

Syria and Afghanistan are different problems. Trump would like to get us out of Afghanistan too, but it is a different problem. Our involvement in Syria and Afghanistan are not really comparable. The two issues should be debated separately from each other.

I'm glad he's getting our troops out of Syria. Bring 'em home, Mr President!

Trump believers have claimed that their messiah is committed to withdrawing US forces from their commitments without regard to the circumstances.

Yes, precipitously abandoning democratic allies in Syria differs from maintaining his quagmire in Afghanistan.

Will he betray the vital Kurdish opposition to ISIS by cutting and running?

Will Trump defer to the Turkish dictator Erdogan?

    Stay tuned.

He's removing US troops from a place of relative safety and sending US troops to where they may die fighting for another country, Saudi Arabia.

Trump's perfidious betrayal of Kurdish allies as if they were trophy wives is very popular with some.

I would love to see the US get out. We have enough oil production now to abandon that entire part of the world. The USA should also get completely out of Europe -- too much burden on the taxpayers.

If the military tide had turned in your favor with the considerable help of your Russian ally, would YOU gas your own people?

If you had turned in all your chemical weapons to the UN as Syria did, HOW could you gas your own people?

Democratic forces or not (that’s debatable), it is NOT the duty of American young people to die for Syria.

Islamic State in Syria would love to see our democratic Kurdish allies abandoned as well, no doubt.

Fomenting an ISIS revival in Syria by abandoning a democratic ally? Hardly.

Nobody cared? The western media sure cared. That was all they could talk about for months at least.

No evidence, but the western media was indignant. Likely you were too.

ISIS is going to revive somewhere and the US can't be everywhere.

ISIS and its affiliates must go by the Book. Until the 12th Imam comes.

Rolling on floor..... my God they certainly have manufactured your consent haven't they? In the context of the Middle East, democratic does not mean the same thing as in America. In the context of the Middle East, "democracy" is sharia law.. that is what the culture and the people want. You and the elites fantasy of secular democracy in the Middle East is dangerous in that it is not concordant with reality. You are forcing your culture on a 3rd world culture at the point of a gun and pretending to be moral while doing it (it has never worked in the Middle East and it never will). It wouldn't bother me if there was a vital American interest involved but there is not.

I wonder how opinions would change if all the people howling to stay in Syria were forced to send their children over there. Every single one of these opinion makers appear to have absolutely no skin in the game. They are certainly courageous with the lives of other Americans' children.

Certainly not for Afghanistan, yet far more continue to die for Afghanistan under Trumpery, where we do not have such a capable and dedicated democratic ally.

Trump's Retreat in Syria Is Dishonorable and Will Cost American Lives

This decision represents not just a moral betrayal of men and women who fought and bled by our side in the battle against the world’s most powerful jihadist army, it represents a strategic blunder that is likely to cost American lives for years to come...

By some estimates, as many as 11,000 Kurds have lost their lives in the fight against ISIS — a staggering death toll borne by a relatively small population...

The result — from an American perspective — has been one of the most successful military operations in a generation. The ISIS caliphate, which once dominated a nation-state sized region covering much of northern Syria and northern Iraq, is now in ruins. ISIS isn’t entirely defeated, but it’s a shadow of its former strength. And the cost in American lives has been a small fraction of the cost incurred in even a single battle of the Iraq War. For example, America suffered almost 700 casualties (82 killed) during the Second Battle of Fallujah. The nation has suffered far fewer casualties during the entire fight against ISIS, stretching from June 2014 until the present day...

Trump sought to justify his decision by declaring that he had been elected to extricate America from “ridiculous, endless wars,” but Trump’s withdrawal does not end the war. It grants our enemies a much-needed respite. ISIS has never ended its fight against America. It’s been weakened, and in some areas it has been routed, but it has not asked for peace. It does not seek peace.

Trump’s action represents the opposite of resolve. It represents an attempt to short-cut a difficult process with a precipitous, impulsive decision that will cost American credibility now and could well cost American lives later. He then compounded that impulsiveness with a bizarre tweet on Monday. Trump said,

“If Turkey “does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom,
    consider to be off-limits,
    I will totally destroy and
obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done it before!)”

This is a typical neo-con opinion that America is the world’s policeman. They believe America should be constantly at war, enforcing our will.
This is a Washington Establishment position that is not shared by the American people.

If you think an endless military presence in Syria is such a good idea, then get YOUR country off its arse and send troops, you pay for it, and you tend your wounded and you attend the funerals. We’ll see how you like it.
